Teaching The Arts in Early Childhood and Primary (EDN236)

|Description||This unit prepares students for teaching and learning the Arts in Early Childhood Education and primary schools. Teaching and learning in Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts; integrating the Arts in the curriculum; how the arts shape, express and communicate experience within a historical perspective; learning the arts as ways of knowing and making meaning and what it means to be human; developing critical arts literacy and capacity to engage with, reflect on and make informed judgements about the arts.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be ready to actively include the arts in your early childhood and primary teaching, across the curriculum and able to demonstrate understanding and application of:
1. Knowledge of arts elements, concepts, content and practice for Early Childhood and Primary teaching
2. Arts curriculum structures and practice in Early Childhood and Primary schools (including the Early Years Framework, Australian Curriculum: The Arts, Western Australian P-10 Syllabus).
3. Arts teaching strategies through studio practices. Age and developmentally appropriate arts teaching strategies (including managing arts and safe practice) designed to progress learning in the arts * Planning and implementing learning sequences for the arts that provide challenge for learners, address curriculum with a range of contemporary strategies (including ICT) * Assessing, evaluating, moderating and reporting arts achievement
4. Identity as an arts teacher: * value and apply the principles of embodied learning (connecting cognitive, somatic and affective dimensions); collaboration and group processes; and, physical, active and hands-on approaches * reflective and reflexive about own arts learning and teaching.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Students must attend four days intensive face-to-face Lectures/ Applied workshops (6 hours per day -24 hours). These applied workshops are compulsory and it allows students to gain both theory (responding) and practise (making) of integrating the Arts in the Curriculum.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is embodied: through practical, Studio/workshop practice in the five arts subjects in the Australian Curriculum: The Arts, students engage in authentic arts activities that serve as the basis for discussion and application of the pedagogy of the arts in early childhood and primary schools. Students make and respond to the five arts subjects in the curriculum.|
|Assessment||There are 3 assessment components:
1. Planning in early childhood and/or primary arts (30%)
2. Reflective Journal 30%
3. Connecting students with Arts in the Community 30% Group plus 10% individual
|Prerequisites||Successful completion of EDN111 Language for Learning and Teaching or BED150/ EDN112 Understanding Teachers' Work or EDU101/EDU1011 Introduction to Teaching or enrolment in a graduate-entry Bachelor of Education (Primary).
Co-requisite (for all students): Digital completion of assignments as stipulated in the Unit Information and Learning Guide.
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed EDU207 Primary Curriculum IIA (Arts, Health, Physical Education, and Technology and Enterprise), EDU217 Primary Curriculum IIB (Arts, Health and Physical Education), EDN225, EDN2251 OR EDN227 may not enrol in this unit for credit.|
|Notes||This unit is studied with EDN248 Teaching Health and Physical Education in Early Childhood and Primary. It is highly recommended that EDN236 and EDN248 be studied in the same semester as EDN2104 Professional Experience: BEd Primary.|
|Quota||This unit is subject to quota. Quota is due to limited resources and space requirements. First-come-first-served basis for enrolment|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
