Learning and Teaching in Educational Communities (EDN300)
|Availability||MURDOCH: ST1-placement, ST2-placement, ST3-placement, ST4-placement|
|Description||Students have the opportunity to experience a learning environment within a school/community or an overseas educational institution. Students will provide a service to the learning community while at the same time being mentored by a teacher or site-based educator. Students undertake a project related to the particular environment in which they are placed whether it be a school or community organisation. The project will be developed in conjunction with the mentor teacher and/or supervisor and the University.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||Each pre-service teacher will
1. Experience an education environment where they are required to assist in teaching, supporting and working with young people to improve learning outcomes.
2. Develop an understanding of the diversity of educational institutions.
3. Develop an understanding of the diversity of opportunities for different groups of young people.
4. Prepare a portfolio outlining their learning during the placement and will include a narrative and artefacts (images etc) of the activities they were involved in.
5. Reflect on the experience and their role and learning.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||A pre and post experience meeting will be held and the timing of this will depend upon the type of experience and the date of the experience.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is experience based. Students undertake an education placement under the mentorship of a teacher or other education based staff member.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Meetings prior to the placement and other meetings will be negotiated with the School of Education and community education provider. The placement time is negotiated, but will be a minimum of 10 to 15 days or its equivalent.|
|Assessment||Students develop an individual professional portfolio outlining their learning in the educational setting. This will include artefacts as part of the record of their experience and a reflection on their learning. Feedback is provided by the mentors and/or university staff throughout the duration of the placement.|
|Prerequisites||Permission from the Unit Coordinator.|
|Notes||Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances.

Completion and submission of these mandatory requirements is essential before placements can be arranged.
Successful completion of this unit will be accepted in lieu of a Specified Elective or placement component if you are enrolled in the Early Childhood program. Timetabling and attendance for this unit will vary according to the individual placement arrangements negotiated.
|Assessment||A result of Ungraded Pass or Fail is awarded for this unit.|
|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
