It offers a theoretical base alongside practical applications for students to develop their skills as early years educators and a philosophy of early childhood pedagogy.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Justify the necessity for early childhood educators to provide a play based learning environment.
2. Have a sound knowledge of the principles of the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian Curriculum.
3. Identify and describe the necessary elements of a high quality early years program.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 5 x 1 hour lectures; 5 podcasts; workshops: 10 x 2 hours
Unit Learning Experiences This unit combines lectures, vodcasts, workshops (internal) weekly study tasks (external) and online components. Murdoch is committed to the average student spending approximately 10 hours per week per unit, hence your commitment to this unit should include an appropriate amount of private study and reading. The use of the online mode of this unit encourages all students to share their learning via discussion.
Assessment The assessment in this unit is designed to equip early childhood students with the advocacy skills and theoretical foundations for working in the early years. Additionally, students will be assessed on their application of key policy documents to practical scenarios.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
