Integrating robotics into the primary classroom (EDN359)
|Description||Students will explore the use of robots as classroom teachers. They will design a teaching resource incorporating number, geometry, measurement or the physical sciences for a robotics project. They will plan, document and evaluate strategies to engage primary school students in weekly reflections. Assignment tasks include completion of an EV3 Lego Mindstorm online course, weekly reflections on practice, a written critique on the use of robots in education and the creation of a digital teaching resource.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to: 1. Use the Lego Mindstorm robot with confidence. 2. Demonstrate understanding of good practices for supporting reflection on learning and for engaging in reflective practice. 3. Explain ways of using robots as cognitive tools for engaging in mathematical and scientific thinking in educational settings. 4. Individually plan, create, organise and publish an information-rich learning task for the mathematics or science curriculum using the Lego Mindstorm robot.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Workshops: 2 hours 15 minutes per week|
|Other Learning Experiences||All students must attend one workshop per week with PEAC students either at Murdoch University or at a school in close proximity to Murdoch University. Workshops will be offered on campus as well as in schools, places in both contexts are limited, so students will be contacted regarding preferences and then assigned to workshops as close to those preferences as possible.
Students must successfully complete Assessment 1: Lego Mindstorm EV3 online module prior to commencement of practicum. Students signing up for the First Lego League PEAC course cycle will have the opportunity to attend the regional and state competitions for the First Lego League with the PEAC teams that qualify.
|Assessment||Four assessment items.
1. students work individually to complete online course
2. weekly reflections
3. students work in pairs/small groups to build knowledge and understand how robots are used in educational settings
4. students work individually to create a shareable project
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the initial teacher education course.
Successful completion of EDN113 Living and Learning with Technology
|Notes||Students need to bring a device to take videos/photos of the robots and reflections completed by the primary school students.
Successful completion of EDN351 Teaching Mathematics in Early Childhood and Primary or EDN442 Teaching Science in Early Childhood and Primary is advised.
|Quota||This unit is subject to quota. to maintain pre-service teacher to PEAC student ratio to facilitate mentoring of small groups working on their robotics project. First-come-first-served basis for enrolment|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
