Teaching Mathematics (EDN373)
|Description||This unit explores the SCSA Year 7-10 course rationale, structures, content, scope and sequence, requirements and resources. Students will evaluate and engage with a range of reproductive and productive pedagogy in a differentiated framework. Comprehensive lesson planning will evidence scaffolded programming, assessment for - and of learning, ICT and cross-curriculum initiatives. Students will explore learning experiences to develop psychologically needs supportive classrooms with a focus on metacognition, feedback, proactive behaviour management and routines.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||At the end of this unit students will be able to:
1. Provide a rationale for the provision of quality Year 7-10 Mathematics programs in schools.
2. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of Year 7-10 secondary school students and how they learn through Mathematics specific lesson planning and resource design.
3. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of Year 7-10 Mathematics curriculum content described by the Western Australian School and Curriculum Standards Authority (WASCSA) and how to teach it in sequenced lesson planning and resource design.
4. Create lesson plans and activities using a variety of differentiated reproductive and productive teaching strategies and resources that cater for student diversity.
5. Proactively create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge's, literacy and numeracy strategies and the use of ICT through context-specific lesson planning and resource design.
6. Demonstrate a range of assessment strategies, ways of providing appropriate feedback, interpreting student data and reporting to students, parents and other stakeholders in the Year 7-10 Mathematics context in assignment tasks and lesson planning.
7. Engage in professional learning, critiquing a range of resources available for ongoing professional learning in the Year 7-10 Mathematics curriculum context through unit and practicum experiences.
8. Engage professionally with colleagues, teachers, parents/carers and the community that can assist in planning and implementing effective teaching and learning in the Year 7-10 Mathematics context through unit and practicum experiences.

|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit encourages students to develop a practical and critical understanding of the principles and practices of teaching and learning in the Mathematics curricula Year 7-10 in Western Australian secondary schools. Particular attention is given to the structure and content of the lower secondary Mathematics curriculum, teaching strategies, curriculum planning, creation of learning resources and assessment. Through critical analysis and evaluation of curriculum documents, application activities, programming and lesson planning students gain knowledge, skills and expertise.
Students attend/view and complete tasks a two-hour workshop (or equivalent) each week. Concepts from all learning materials aim to provide the foundation of quality teaching in lower secondary school Mathematics teaching. Blended learning in the form of workshop-lecture, and on-line self-directed study, on-line discussions and collaborate sessions used for a practical application approach that will develop key understandings and provide opportunities to apply concepts to teaching in a contemporary and differentiated way. Modelling of teaching strategies will be implemented to enhance learning experiences.
|Assessment||There are three assessment components in this unit:
Participation (15%). Participation in online discussion forum
Assignment 1 (40%). Interview and narrated presentation
Assignment 2 (45%). Planning a Program; curriculum unit and resources
|Prerequisites||Successful completion of EDN2101 Professional Experience: BEd Secondary Teaching.|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed EDN314 Mathematics and the Curriculum (Secondary) (Minor) may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
