Teaching Science (EDN376)

|Description||This unit offers opportunities for developing knowledge and understanding of curriculum and pedagogy in the lower secondary science teaching area. Students engage with national and international science curriculum perspectives. The unit focuses on the structure and content of the curriculum, teaching strategies, curriculum planning, curriculum integration, differentiation and assessment and safe practice. Through critical analysis and evaluation of curriculum documents, hands-on activities, the creation of learning resources, programming, lesson planning and micro-teaching students gain knowledge, practical skills and expertise.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. apply knowledge of current learning theories to the science learning area
2. demonstrate pedagogical content knowledge and teaching skills relevant to the Lower Secondary Science curriculum
3. critically analyse Lower Secondary Science curriculum documents to plan, teach, and evaluate engaging lessons and teaching programs
4. identify strategies relevant to the science learning area that enhance engagement and participation whilst maintaining students' well-being and safety
5. use assessment strategies of student achievement suitable for the Lower Secondary Science learning area
6. demonstrate an understanding of relevant legislative policies and processes
7. appreciate the need for ongoing professional learning for science teachers
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Internal students: 2 x 2 hour workshops each teaching week.
External students: 5 x 2 hour online sessions.
|Unit Learning Experiences||External and internal students in this unit are expected to engage in a total of 150 hours of study during the semester. Concepts from all workshops, readings and individual tasks aim to provide the foundation of quality teaching in middle secondary school Science teaching. Blended learning in the form of workshop activity resources and tasks, on-line discussions and self-directed study may be used to support some hands-on approaches that will work with key understandings and provide opportunities to apply concepts to teaching in a practical way. Modelling of teaching strategies will be highlighted via some audio/visual workshop recordings to enhance learning experiences. Internal students are expected to engage collaboratively through all workshops that will provide open group discussion, hands on activities including and unpacking resources intended to nurture and support an awareness of engaging pedagogy|
|Other Learning Experiences||In support of strengthening views r.e. Science as Human Endeavour (SHE), students will be invited to review TV/Video programs that address the socially critical elements of science and to post their views and opinions on the discussion board on LMS.|
|Assessment||The assessment in this unit consists of three assignments that cover a range of assessable items: practical application (teaching performance), planning and preparation of a lesson plan and a program, and essay writing. The assignments cover all unit learning outcomes by requiring students to demonstrate content, curriculum and planning knowledge as well as the ability to determine appropriate assessment and teaching strategies to engage students within the given legal and safety requirements. Students are also required to think of the wider implications of science education in terms of science as a human endeavour which includes thinking ethically and globally.

|Prerequisites||Successful completion of EDN2101 Professional Experience: BEd Secondary Teaching.|
|Notes||Curriculum Teaching Area 2 in Science requires a minimum of two units (six points) at Part I-Level and at least two units (3 points) at Part II-Level from the Science Major.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
