Professional Experience: BEd Secondary (EDN410)

Description This unit typically occurs in the fourth year of BEd Secondary. It is a semester unit including a 10-day block -placement in student's Learning Area A. To develop learning, online tasks are to be completed during the semester. An information meeting will be held prior to the professional experience.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should to be able to:
1. Demonstrate in depth knowledge of content of teaching area
2. Plan lesson sequences using knowledge of content, resources and effective teaching strategies
3. Demonstrate the capacity to implement plans, effectively facilitating classroom activities
4. Demonstrate effective implementation of worthwhile assessment strategies, followed by timely and appropriate feedback to students about their learning
5. Demonstrating understanding of the role of Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
6. Continue to develop effective communication skills, relate collaboratively and demonstrate personal , social and professional ethics
Timetabled Learning Activities
Unit Learning Experiences Becoming a teacher requires a sound theoretical understanding of the principles of effective learning and teaching as well as the ability to enact those principles in a school environment. This unit allows students to translate theoretical understandings of effective learning and teaching in a real context, and to experience the organisational, practical, interpersonal and ethical demands of teaching
Other Learning Experiences 10 distributed day block placement and one meeting before the placement is to be undertaken.
Assessment Assessment in Ungraded Pass/Fail. All online tasks must be completed in order to pass the unit. At the end of the Professional Experience, the Mentor will submit a Pass/Fail summative assessment based on the Pre-Service Teacher's ability to address the identified APST and MGA.
Assessment in this unit is designed to identify the extent to which students have addressed the required Australian Graduate Teacher Standards (AGSTs) and Murdoch Graduate Attributes (MGA). (See checklist in the Unit Information booklet).
During the Professional Experience, formative feedback will be completed with a Midway Self-Evaluation Report, completed by the Pre-Service Teacher and discussed with the Mentor Teacher to ensure accuracy. Ongoing feedback will be provided by the Mentor, throughout the Professional Experience.
Prerequisites Students must be enrolled in a Bachelor of Education Secondary Teaching.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EDN4101 Professional Experience: BEd Secondary OR EDN4103 Professional Experience: BEd Secondary HPE may not enrol in this unit for credit.
Notes Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances.

Completion and submission of these mandatory requirements is essential before placements can be arranged.
Assessment A result of Ungraded Pass or Fail is awarded for this unit.
Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
