Professional Experience: Programming Across the Curriculum (EDN4100)

Description The unit typically occurs in the fourth year of study in Bachelor of Education course. It incorporates a compulsory two-week + 2 Staff PD Days placement in a school. Pre-service Teachers (PSTs) complete tasks before, during and after the placement. The placement provides opportunities to strengthen the nexus between theory and practice with guidance of a mentor Teacher. AITSL standards frame unit outcomes and expectations.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the WA syllabus content and teaching strategies (English, Math, Science/S&E).
2. Organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence.
3. Plan lesson sequences using knowledge of student learning, content and effective teaching strategies.
4. Demonstrate the capacity to organise classroom activities and provide clear directions.
5. Demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies to assess learning.
6. Demonstrate understanding of the purpose of providing timely and appropriate feedback to students about their learning.
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying professional learning needs
Timetabled Learning Activities Online participation - Assignment 1; Staff PD Days & two-week block placement; Assignment 2.
Unit Learning Experiences PSTs will be allocated a school for the whole year, and will be expected to visit the school before the start of the Staff PD Days and two-week block placement in School Term 1 Weeks 1 & 2. These early visits will help PSTs to become familiar with the school, the class and the teacher's expectations and practices. The practical component of this unit will be supplemented by online lecture/seminar sessions, designed to support PSTs' learning of the key objectives for this unit. All sessions will be recorded and made available online.
SimLab session with an 'upset' parent will be completed to help develop skills to manage challenging situations.

Staff PD Days
Two week block placement to occur in the first two weeks of School Term 1 (note that this is prior to the start of Semester 1).
Additional days' attendance at the school is required, prior to placement to attend school based professional development. This school experience will be in the same school as the final placement unit (FPE1 &2).
Participation in a SimLab session after the professional experience is also required.
Assessment Assessment in this unit is designed to identify the extent to which students have addressed the required Australian Professional Teacher Standards and Murdoch Graduate Attributes as well as their capacity to plan, teach, assess and moderate children's work. PSTs must pass every component in order to pass the unit. 1. Successful completion of, and engagement with, weekly tasks and SimLab Session. 2. Successful completion of placement.
Prerequisites Successful completion of EDN332 Children, Families and Communities, EDN3102 Professional Experience: Mathematics in Practice and successful completion of OR concurrent enrolment in EDN353 Country, Cultures and People, EDN442 Teaching Science in Early Childhood and Primary, EDN441 Teaching Humanities.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EDU3154 Professional Experience: Primary BEd may not enrol in the unit for credit
Notes Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances.

Assessment A result of Ungraded Pass or Fail is awarded for this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
