Professional Experience: Programming Across the Curriculum (EDN4100)

Description The unit typically occurs in the fourth year of study in Bachelor of Education course. It incorporates a compulsory two-week placement in a school including 2 professional learning days. Students complete tasks before, during and after the placement beginning with developing an Individual Education Plan co-constructed with their moderator and presented to mentor. The placement provides opportunities to strengthen the nexus between theory and practice with guidance of a mentor Teacher. AITSL standards frame unit outcomes and expectations.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the WA syllabus content and teaching strategies (English, Math, Science/S&E).
2. Organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence.
3. Plan lesson sequences using knowledge of student learning, content and effective teaching strategies.
4. Demonstrate the capacity to organise classroom activities and provide clear directions.
5. Demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies to assess learning.
6. Demonstrate understanding of the purpose of providing timely and appropriate feedback to students about their learning.
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying professional learning needs (Indivdual Education Plan, Goal setting and Reflection process).
Timetabled Learning Activities
Unit Learning Experiences This experience includes before, during and after placement activities. PSTs will be allocated a school for the whole year, and will be expected to visit the school before the start of the two-week block placement in School Term 2. These early visits provide opportunity to become familiar with the school, the class and the teacher's expectations and practices, including developing a two-week plan for the class . During the block placement you will be expected to teach across all learning areas in the Primary curriculum. The practical component of this unit will be supplemented by online lecture/seminar sessions, designed to support your learning of the key objectives for this unit. All sessions will be recorded and made available online.
Other Learning Experiences Two professional development days and Two week block placement to occur in the first two weeks of School Term 1 (note that this is prior to the start of Semester 1).Additional days' attendance at the school prior to placement to attend school based professional development. This school experience will be in the same school as the final placement unit (FPE1 &2).
Assessment Students complete an Individual Education Plan with their external moderator for the year. [All 4th year students are assigned a moderator to support them throughout the year]. Assessment in this unit is designed to identify the extent to which students have addressed the required Australian Graduate Teacher Standards and Murdoch Graduate Attributes as well as their capacity to plan, teach, assess and moderate children's work. Students must pass every component in order to pass the unit. 1. Successful completion of, and Engagement with, weekly tasks 2. Successful completion of placement.

Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EDU3154 Professional Experience: Primary BEd may not enrol in the unit for credit
Notes Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances.

Assessment A result of Ungraded Pass or Fail is awarded for this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
