Final Professional Experience 2: Primary Teaching (EDN4300)

Description This unit gives students the opportunity to consolidate their theoretical understandings of teaching and develop a high level of professional competence in a Primary School setting. It aims to nurture the development of the reflective practitioner and establish a foundation for confronting the issues associated with the professional responsibilities of being a teacher. On completion of the unit students will be expected to show evidence of achievement at the Graduate level in each of the Australian Graduate Standards for Teachers.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit pre-service teachers should be making sound progress to be able to:
1. Know Pre-service Teachers and how they learn
a. Synthesize knowledge of self, learner and context
2. Know the content and how to teach it
a. Develop and implement specific curriculum structures and polices in major teaching area
b. Work with current and future curriculum issues
3. Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning
a. Take individual responsibility for teaching
b. Utilise short, mid and long term integrated planning strategies
4. Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
a. Synthesise theory and practice
b. Incorporate a range of relevant pedagogies
c. Develop personal classroom management philosophy and incorporate into planning
5. Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning
a. Develop and implement a range of assessments appropriate to major curriculum area
6. Engage in professional learning
7. Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
Timetabled Learning Activities
Unit Learning Experiences This unit focuses on the application of theory in practice. Pre-service teachers are expected to take on increasing responsibility for teaching, as well as contribute to the broader life of the school by participating in other duties where appropriate. By the end of the placement, pre-service teachers are expected to be able to work independently to plan, teach and assess across learning areas.

Pre-service teachers will be mentored by a qualified teacher throughout the placement. Teachers will introduce them to the expectations and responsibilities of the teaching profession at both the classroom and the whole school level. A team teaching approach to the planning, teaching and assessment cycle will be employed during this placement. Students will focus on all Australian Graduate Standards for Teachers (Graduate Level) and the Murdoch Graduate Attributes.
Other Learning Experiences Seven weeks full-time block placement in a primary school.
Assessment Students will be assessed on a standardised assessment form based on the Australian Graduate Standards for Teachers (AGST) and Murdoch Graduate Attributes. (MGA)

There are 2 assessment components:
1. School Experience - Successful achievement of the relevant AGSTs (see checklist in the Unit Information booklet) - weighted 60% and Graded, N, P, C, D ,HD
2. Written Assignments - weighted 40%
- (a) Portfolio addressing AGST
- (b) Research & Presentation Assignment
Prerequisites Enrolment in the final semester of a Bachelor of Education (B1319) Primary Teaching or Primary 1-10 Health and Physical Education. Students are required to have successfully completed EDN4100 Professional Experience: Programming Across the Curriculum OR EDU3154 School Experience: Primary BEd, and all other course requirements prior to commencing the Final Profession Experience units.
Exclusions Students enrolled in Bachelor of Education Early Childhood 0-8, the BEd (Secondary) or Secondary GradDipEd may not enrol in this unit.
Notes Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
