Early Childhood Learning Environments (EDN432)

Description Examines how indoor and outdoor experiences and environments can support early childhood learning, health, well-being and safety. Case studies focused on the professional skills and knowledge necessary for the provision of nurturing, inclusive and sustainable environments are reviewed. National Quality Standard Administrative and legislative requirements of workplace practice in relation to management and administration are examined. Contemporary research on advocacy, leadership professional development (and identity) in the field of early childhood education and care are studied to inform student's reflective practice.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit students should be able to: 1. Evaluate early childhood learning environments in accordance with the National Quality Standard; 2. Understand the qualities of advocacy, leadership professional development (and identity) in the field of early childhood education and care that inform reflective practice; 3. Develop skills in designing provocations that inspire young children's creativity and curiosity; 4. Explain the relationship between early childhood philosophy and early childhood learning environments; and 5. Reflect upon a range of educational activities that can build young children's respect and awareness towards achieving a sustainable environment.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lecture: 1 Hour per week; Workshop: 2 Hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences Murdoch is committed to the average student spending approximately 10 hours per week per unit; hence your commitment to this unit should include an appropriate amount of private study and reading. The use of the online mode of this unit encourages all students to share their learning via discussion. Audio visual and online videos will be incorporated according to their relevance to the topics each week.
Other Learning Experiences To complete Assignment One, students will participate in an online group assignment. To complete Assignment Two students will undertake fieldwork in a Long Day-care Centre. Details are provided in the Unit Information Guide, which will be available online at the commencement of the semester. Students will also complete five distributed days (7 hours per day including meal breaks) working with children aged 2-3 years in an a Long Day-care Centre.
Assessment AssessmentIn this unit students will complete two assignments and an exam. Assignment One is an online group assignment weighted at 35%. Assignment Two is a Fieldwork Report weighted at 35%. The final exam is weighted at 30%. Detailed feedback on your assignments will be provided by your tutor.
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary Teaching) and successful completion of EDN355 Principles and Practices in Early Childhood Education and EDN221 Learning and Teaching
Exclusions Students who have completed EDN238 Early Childhood Learning Environments may not enrol in this unit for credit.
Notes Prior to undertaking fieldwork at an Early Learning Development Centre, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances. Information and forms regarding these mandatory requirements can be accessed via the Professional Experience website: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/School-of-Education/Professional-Experience Completion and submission of these mandatory requirements is essential before fieldwork is arranged.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
