Final Professional Experience 1: Early Childhood Teaching (K - PP) (EDN434)
|Availability||MURDOCH: ST2-placement, ST3-placement|
|Description||Students undertake a three-week block of school-based placement in an early childhood setting in the school in which they will complete their Professional Internship. Students must successfully complete this preliminary component in order to proceed to the Professional Internship: Early Childhood Teaching (K-PP).|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit pre-service teachers should be making sound progress to be able to:
1. Know Pre-service Teachers and how they learn
a.Synthesize knowledge of self, learner and context

a.Develop and implement specific curriculum structures and polices in major teaching area
b.Work with current and future curriculum issues
3.Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning

b.Utilise short, mid and long term integrated planning strategies

a.Synthesise theory and practice
b.Incorporate a range of relevant pedagogies
c.Develop personal classroom management philosophy and incorporate into planning

a.Develop and implement a range of assessments appropriate to major curriculum area
6.Engage in professional learning
7.Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
|Timetabled Learning Activities|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is applying theory into practice. Pre-service teachers will be mentored by a qualified teacher throughout the duration of the placement who will introduce them to the scope of the teaching profession. A team teaching approach to the planning, teaching and assessment cycle will be employed during this placement. Students will begin to focus on all Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate Level) and the Murdoch Graduate Attributes.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Three weeks of full-time block placement in a school.
One meeting will be held, prior to the Professional Experience, to explain the expectations and requirements of the Professional Experience.
|Assessment||Assessment is designed to identify the extent to which students address required Australian Graduate Teacher Standards (AGSTs) (checklist in the Unit Information booklet) and Murdoch Graduate Attributes (MGA):
* Critical and creative thinking
* Social interaction
* Independent and lifelong learning
* Social justice
* In-depth knowledge of a field of study
Assessment is based on Pre-Service Teacher's ability to demonstrate the development of planning/teaching skills and qualities required for teaching, during placement.
Formative assessment and feedback will be provided by the onsite Mentor and External Moderator throughout the placement. This will be directly linked to the unit aims, AGSTs and MGAs.
Mentor will submit a summative assessment based on pre-service teacher's ability to address identified AGST and MGA. Pass/Fail Grade
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the final semester of a Bachelor of Education Early Childhood and Primary Teaching OR Bachelor of Education Early Childhood 0-8. Successful completion of EDN4100 Professional Experience: Programming Across the Curriculum OR EDU3154 School Experience: Primary BEd,, and all other course requirements prior to commencing the Final Profession Experience unit.|
|Exclusions||BEd (Primary) students who are not enrolled in Early Childhood Education.
Students who have successfully completed EDU379 Professional Internship Prelim: Primary BEd/ECE may not enrol in this unit for credit.
|Notes||Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
