Teaching Science in Early Childhood and Primary (EDN442)

|Description||Focuses on science knowledge and teaching skills that are needed to facilitate the development of early childhood and primary school students' science literacy. Students will examine inquiry learning, alternative conceptions, engagement in science and other topics in science education associated with developing science literacy in the early childhood and primary setting. These learning experiences are based on readings in science education research literature with emphasis on the development of teaching and learning materials to be used in primary science classrooms.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the earth and space sciences, physical, chemical, and biological concepts included in the Australian Curriculum: Science Learning Area.
2. Display expertise with inquiry skills of questioning and predicting, planning and conducting, processing and analyzing data and information, evaluating and communicating.
3. Design lessons to teach the concepts in the Australian Curriculum: Science Learning Area in a supportive and safe learning environment.
4. Use the Australian Curriculum: Science Learning Area to plan a logical sequence of science lessons to support early childhood and primary student science learning informed by theory and research.
5. Use the Australian Curriculum: Science Learning Area to plan a logical sequence of science lessons to promote a high level of engagement for early childhood and primary school learners in a supportive and safe learning environment.
6. Develop and implement questions to probe student understanding of science concepts.
7. Design lessons that incorporate planned formative assessment informed by theory and research of alternate conceptions of science.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures 1 hour per week, Laboratory/Seminar: 1 x 2 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Students participate in a one-hour lecture and complete a two-hour lab/seminar each week. Lectures in this unit are interactive with demonstrations and learning activities that model teaching in the early childhood and primary setting. Students who are unable to attend lectures listen to the lectures while completing the activities and viewing the screens in Echo Recordings. Each week students are expected to participate in lectures, complete the required reading, answer the focus questions and complete the lab and seminar activities. The science lab activities are designed to use everyday materials that are easily resourced. All students are required to make use of the online discussion site to find online materials, share information, clarify issues, and contact colleagues. This unit has been designed to rely heavily on small group and interactive learning activities in both the internal and external mode of study.|

|Prerequisites||Successful completion of BED100 Ideas in Education, BED150/EDN112/EDN1121 Understanding Teachers' Work, EDN111 Language for Learning and Teaching, BED200 Assessment and Action Research, and successful completion or concurrent enrolment in EDN351 Teaching Mathematics in Early Childhood and Primary.|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed EDU286 or EDU2861 may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
