Teaching Senior Secondary Health (EDN478)

Description This unit will prepare students for teaching Health Studies in the senior school. It will focus on various forms of the Health Studies curriculum currently taught in WA schools and will develop an understanding of school based, content, assessment and moderation as required by School Curriculum and Standards Authority. It will explore the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to promote an understanding of the importance of personal and community action in promoting health.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Provide a rationale for the provision of quality Health Studies (HS) programs in schools.
2. Clearly articulate the requirements of implementing the HS curriculum described by the Western Australian School and Curriculum Standards Authority (WASCSA).
3. Display understanding of the Year 11 and 12 HS content at a level required to teach.
4. Prepare HS teaching activities using productive and reproductive pedagogy.
5. Develop HS appropriate assessment tasks.
6. Plan for, display and evaluate quality HS teaching.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 2 hours per week; Workshops: 1 hour per week; Pre-lecture and workshop reading; Assessment tasks.

Assessment Assessment 1. Micro-teaching your peers - .40%

Assessment 2. Evaluation of the teaching of an existing HS program - 60%
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Secondary Teaching (Science Combined Sport and Health Science) (BEd+BSc), and successful completion of EDN410 Professional Experience BEd Secondary.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EDN419 Health and Physical Education and the Curriculum (Major) may not enrol in this unit for credit.
Students enrolled in Graduate Diploma Secondary may not enrol in this unit for credit

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
