Inclusive Education: Contemporary Perspectives and Practices (EDN509)

Description This unit seeks to assist participants to identify and understand diverse learning needs, develop and implement strategies to enhance learning outcomes, and monitor student progress. This unit explores inclusive education; it's history, ideology and most importantly, it's realisation in education settings. This unit will assist students in developing depth of understanding about inclusive education policy and practice across contexts. It explores factors that support education systems and classroom teachers to provide quality learning environments for all students.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Students develop a sound understanding of many of the significant issues and the public policies surrounding the education of students who require teaching and learning adjustments in the Australian and international context;
2. Students gain increased awareness of the ideologies and politics surrounding inclusive education;
3. Students gain increased awareness of the notions of difference and disability and giftedness and talent;
4. Students gain increased understanding of a topic of interest regarding particular disabilities and/or special needs and giftedness and talent and the possible impacts on development;
5. Students build a sound base of generic information about practices (particularly teaching and learning adjustments) which support the inclusion of students with disabilities and/or special needs and those who are gifted and talented in education settings.
Timetabled Learning Activities Seminars: 2 hr Seminars per week. Lectures 1hr per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The unit combines lectures with interactive seminars that include group activities, collective and individual reflections, case-based or video-based discussions of practice, discussion of readings, and role-play. Students may pursue topics of interest such as: inclusive education policy and pedagogy; whole school and classroom practices; assessment and planning; instructional strategies, collaboration and consultation.
Other Learning Experiences Students are expected to apply their learning in this unit as part of their Professional Internship: Preliminary and Professional Internship.
Assessment Assignment 1: Literature review (30%): Students research evidence-based strategies and reflect upon how these ideas and practices connect with their beliefs and learning in the unit. Aligned to Learning Objectives 1, 2 & 3.
Assignment 2: Research Presentation (40%): Students are asked to present their research findings with a focus on specific disabilities and strategies to cater for these students. Aligned to Learning Objectives 4 & 5.
Presentation (30%): Covers critical unit content in the form of a 10 minute presentation. Aligned to all 5 Learning Objectives.Students should expect quantitative feedback as well as qualitative comments on their work with a focus on specific areas of improvement.
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) or the Graduate Certificate in International Education in Schools.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
