|Description||This unit introduces historical and contemporary issues and practices related to international education, schools, teachers and students. A range of international curricular are examined, particularly the International Baccalaureate suite of Programs (PYP, MYP, DP). The unit includes field and virtual experience in IB schools (for non-IB teachers). A digital Portfolio of Learning will be developed against the IB Standards and Practices. The approach to learning is based on inquiry and reflection.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit students will:
1. Develop a personal philosophy about international education.
2. Critique the history and key characteristics of international education, international curriculum and international competencies/ mindedness.
3. Critique the essential elements of an IB programme and other international curricula.
4. Communicate a reflective critique on understanding and critical interpretation of key issues and concepts underpinning international education in relation to your own experience.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lecture: 1 x 2 hour per week, Workshop: 1 x 1 hour per week.
Summer School mode only requires attendance at a 5 day intensive at the Murdoch campus

|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is based on inquiry and reflection. The unit is divided into seven areas of inquiry: History of International Education; Globalization and Internationalisation; International Educations, schools, teachers and students; International Curriculums, Organisations and networks; the suite of International Baccalaureate Programs PYP, MYP and DP; International Education in the 21st Century. Reflective practice is embedded in the structure of the unit and assessment tasks. A digital portfolio is used by students to provide evidence of their learning throughout the unit against the IB Standards and Practices. Field Experience in IB schools provides an opportunity for non-IB experience students to observe IB planning, teaching and assessment in-situ.
The unit content for EDN519 is offered in several modes throughout the year:
Semester 2 - Internal, Semester 2 External,
Summer (Internal five-day intensive mode)
Offshore in Dubai - trimester mode.
The content and assessment is the same for each mode. Access to the IB Online Curriculum Centre is available if the students are enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of International Education in Schools.

|Assessment||Assessment for EDN519 includes three assessment tasks:
1. Critical Analysis and Creative Presentation- observed (20%)
2. Portfolio of Learning based on IB Standards and Practices: evidence against the criteria based on readings (annotated bibliography) and school visits (50%)
3. IB Research paper based on area of interest (30%)
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in either the Master of Education (Coursework), the Master of Asian Studies, the GradDipEd (Tertiary and Workplace) or the Grad Cert in Education (International Education)|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed EDU613 / EDN513 International Education: Issues and Practices in Schools cannot enrol in this unit for credit|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
