Dynamics of Cultural Diversity in the Workplace and the Community (EDN546)

|Description||Managing and capitalising on the rich potential of cultural diversity requires a cross-cultural mindset, intercultural competence and positive leadership capabilities. Challenges and opportunities offered by cultural diversity are examined at multiple levels (individual, group, organisation, communities), diverse angles (cross-cultural management and leadership, intercultural communication, cultural intelligence, multicultural teams) and international perspectives (Australian, Asian, American, European). Assumptions, strengths and limitations of theories and research to guide professional practice are scrutinised. The unit builds upon participants' experience of cultural diversity.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to demonstrate a good working knowledge of:
1. How key cultural constructs from cross-cultural and intercultural research have been used to interpret experience and behaviours, and the limitations of such constructs.
2. Important challenges and opportunities arising from culturally diverse workplaces and communities, and the contribution of multicultural individuals.
3. The articulation of culture, cultural intelligence and leadership in organisations and communities
4. Multicultural team diversity as an asset rather than a liability.
5. How to identify and critically analyse workplace and community initiatives that attempt to promote cultural diversity, and how to develop initiatives that can make a difference.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Seminars and workshops are delivered in semester teaching mode (8 blocks of 3 hours). All classes take place after 4.30pm. Students will then complete research assignments independently, in consultation with teaching staff.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit offers a combination of structured timetabled activities (integrated lecture-seminar type), semi-structured learning activities (small group discussions/tasks) as well as self-directed learning tasks.|
|Assessment||Assignment 1: Critical review of one well known cultural construct (20%)
Assignment 2: Interactive tutorial presentation (small group); this includes a subsequent individual written summary and reflection (total 30%)
Assignment 3: Individual project or Annotated bibliography or Essay (50%).

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
