Teaching Second/Foreign Languages (EDN556)

|Description||This unit provides teachers of a second/foreign language, or those who teach linguistically diverse cohorts, with skills in the areas of curriculum design, adaptation and implementation. It comprises the general study of language and curriculum, with hands-on application of specific language curricula, and opportunities for making discipline-specific curricula more accessible to non-native speaking students. It examines language teaching practice/general classroom approaches that are inclusive and supportive of linguistically diverse cohorts and adaptable to all contexts and disciplines.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||By the end of this unit it is expected that each student will have:
1. A commitment to critical reflective practice as the essence of effective teaching
2. The required knowledge to assist them to conceive and reconceive what they do in the classroom
3. An awareness of the place of L2, or language of instruction as a L2 (both in theory and practice) in educational institutions at all levels
4. Knowledge of the history of the teaching of second/foreign languages and of the different methodologies and approaches used and how such practices can be adapted to support linguistically diverse cohorts of students studying in a language of instruction that is different to their L1
5. Some understanding of basic linguistic theory, particularly with regard to the processes of SLA and SLT
6. A familiarity with relevant national and state policy documentation associated with the learning and teaching of Languages
7. A familiarity with the Western Australian School Curriculum and Standards Authority Curriculum and Assessment Requirements or equivalent curriculum and standards documents applicable to the context of study
8. A familiarity with the content and structure of the Australian Curriculum: Languages (or relevant curriculum), and for students intending to teach English as an additional language or dialect, familiarity with the acara EAL/D Learning Progression (or relevant equivalent)
9. Proficiency in dealing with all areas of the 'curriculum jigsaw'
10. An appreciation of the problems and difficulties associated with L2 study / study in an L2 at different levels of the education system
11. Developed a professional concern for, and interest in the issues associated with the teaching and learning of second/foreign languages and/or teaching and learning in a language that is an L2 for the student body, and have a personal commitment towards achieving the standards of an accomplished languages and cultures teacher
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures/seminars: 1 x 2 hours per week.
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is one that integrates active workshop or online participation together with engagement with the theoretical perspectives that underpin and inform languages teaching and learning and/or teaching in an L2. As such, learning experiences promote a theory / practice blend.|
|Assessment||Students will be required to design learning tasks, to plan learning sequences and programs and to provide reflective commentary on their learning experiences. Students will also sit an examination to test essential understandings of this unit.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Master of Education OR Master of Asian Studies OR Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) OR Master of Teaching (Primary) OR Graduate Diploma in Education (Tertiary and Workplace). For students in the Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) successful completion of, or enrolment in EDN550 AND a high level of proficiency in a second or foreign language. Proficiency may need to be confirmed by the unit coordinator.|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed EDN516 Second / Foreign Languages and the Curriculum may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
