Numeracy and Learning (EDN562)
|Availability||MURDOCH: AW1-internal, AW1-external|
|Description||The focus is on numeracy, what it means and how to help children learn it. We explore numeracy through 'everyday' tasks from two approaches - one from a broad-societal perspective and the other from the teaching-learning nexus. For the former, issues include definitions of numeracy and what it means to be numerate in an increasingly technological society. As we develop some knowledge and understanding, we explore how we can enhance the teaching and learning of numeracy within the school context.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||Unit Learning Outcomes for this unit are aligned with the Course Learning Outcomes for the Master of Teaching and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. Describe what numeracy is in a broad and general sense, and within the contexts of schools
2. Articulate a personal view about what numeracy is
3. Demonstrate personal competence in numeracy including the associated content knowledge needed to teach numeracy up to middle secondary levels
4. Design an activity for the purpose of learning numeracy for an appropriately identified year level, demonstrating due consideration of apt teaching strategies
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Workshops/seminars: 2 hours per week over 10 weeks.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The Unit Learning Experience is framed by the workshop-seminar dyad. Important information will be highlighted in the workshop. Students are expected to prepare for each workshop-seminar; preparation would include some reading of selected texts and articles, and viewing of short video clips. They are expected to prepare and present their ideas and viewpoints, show-and-tell artefacts related to their conception of numeracy. Through their own creation of learning activities related to numeracy, students will learn to identify specific learning needs and develop associated teaching strategies. The presentation and discussion of their ideas will help broaden the group's range of identification of learning needs and development of teaching strategies. Students will also learn to assess each other's work.|
|Assessment||The assessment will be based on
1. A narrated slide show presentation about 'What is Numeracy?'
2. A numeracy test
3. A 2000 word description of a learning activity related to numeracy appropriate to an identified year level.
For all 3 assessment items, feedback will be in the form of tutor's comments and marks.
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Primary) and successful completion of EDN5501 Transition to Teaching.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
