Opportunities with e-learning (EDN575)

Description Emerging technologies and apps such as twitter, blogs, podcasts, and mobile technologies are changing the educational technology landscape and generating new opportunities and challenges for learning. Teachers across educational sectors are exploring and sharing innovative ways to use technology to foster interaction, collaboration, and increased excitement for learning. This unit invites participants to engage with the pedagogical issues facing educators in the eLearning environment, reflect on their practices and develop strategies for effectively integrating new technologies at their own institutions.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Understanding and applying models of teaching: TPACK, SMAR, R2D2 and TIM.
2. Explore different ways of using new technologies including mobile and Apps for learning and teaching.
3. Design innovative pedagogies to use in their on teaching context.
4. Use innovative technologies with the appropriate pedagogies to achieve teaching goals.
5. Create and demonstrate the use of an eBook.
6. Critique research literature related to emerging learning technologies and pedagogies.
Timetabled Learning Activities Intensive Mode Teaching involving Seminars/Lectures each day from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm will take place in the second week of the Winter teaching period. Dates and venue will be confirmed on the Unit LMS prior to commencement.
Unit Learning Experiences IMT- Intense Mode of Teaching: One-week intense workshop using teamwork approach, building knowledge collaboratively. This is followed by two weeks online learning with critical-friend interactions.
The preparation to the unit will involve pre-reading. Students will present their learning from the readings in the workshop.
Develop a community of learners to create peer-learning.
Other Learning Experiences * Online component will start a week prior to the IMT and will involve readings and preparation) * Intensive Mode Teaching (IMT) will take place during the fourth week of the summer Teaching period from 9:00am-4:00pm, and be followed by 2 weeks of online interactions. The final assessment is due at the end of the teaching period.
Assessment The eBook-learning Journal: The aim of creating an eBook is to present a personal account of 'so-what' in relation to this unit. The 'so what' means what are the 'take-home' concepts and practices for you in relation to teaching strategies that you can implement now as a result of taking this unit in your teaching context. This eBook will be your journey in this unit, in which you will reflect on the processes that draw on all the activities that worked for you and what would you do with them. It includes initial planning - 20%, Presentation - 30%, Final eBook (Personal) - 50%. Use of rubric: Level of reflection Content integration with technology and pedagogy (TPACK) Originality, innovativeness and creativity Academic presentation.
Prerequisites Enrolment in a graduate course.
Notes Students will be required to bring iPad or Laptop.
Quota This unit is subject to quota. Quota is due to limited resources and capacity to support students in workshops. Preference will be given to Education students; non-Education students are to seek permission of Unit Coordinator.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
