Literacy and Numeracy in Secondary Education (EDN582)

|Description||This unit covers literacy and numeracy with equal time given to both areas. It aims to ensure that students are equipped with fundamental literacy skills. Literacy is a vehicle to empower, negotiate, inspire and encourage critical thinking. Students explore strategies to support language development in their classrooms.
Numeracy is explored through both a broad-societal perspective and a teaching-learning nexus. We explore what it means to be numerate in an increasingly technological society and how numeracy can be taught within schools.

ULO 6: Explore what teaching numeracy might look like explicitly in terms of learning activities within the classroom
ULO 7: Engage with each other's work including presentation of ideas, contributions to discussions and creation of learning activities
ULO 8: Gain familiarity with LANTITE items on Numeracy through solving typical questions
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Workshop/Seminars: Two hours per week for 10 weeks|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Literacy:
Interactive learning experiences are conducted by weekly lectures and workshops for internal students, and lecture recordings and online tasks and discussions for external students. Learning experiences aim to ensure a foundation for effective literacy skills to enhance quality teaching. Students will have opportunities to work collaboratively to develop key understandings each week and apply concepts to teaching in a practical way. Tutors will model teaching strategies to enhance students' practical understandings. A positive, hardworking and collaborative atmosphere will be fostered.
The learning experience for the Numeracy Part is framed by the workshop-seminar dyad. Important information will be highlighted in the workshop. Students are expected to prepare for each workshop-seminar, including reading of selected texts and articles, and/or viewing of short video clips. They are expected to participate either in workshops or through online forums, contributing their ideas and viewpoints related to their conception of numeracy including some of their own creation of learning activities related to numeracy. The presentation and discussion of their ideas will help broaden the group's range of identification of learning needs and development of teaching strategies.

|Assessment||The assessment for the Literacy part will be based on class participation for the first half of the unit, an online quiz on literacy and an assignment. Feedback about class participation will be made known regularly. For the quiz, results will be known after the quiz is closed. The assignment is about creating an activity for learning literacy and describing the activity in a narrated presentation. The assessment components for the Numeracy part is similar in structure: class participation for the second half, an online quiz about numeracy and an assignment about creating an activity for learning numeracy and describing the activity in a narrated presentation.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
