Strategies for Effective Learning and Teaching in Secondary Schools (EDN584)

|Description||This unit examines the knowledge and skills required to effectively plan and implement learning experiences based on knowledge of how students learn and effective teaching and assessment strategies in a secondary teaching context. Students will analyse, evaluate and apply a range of theories related to instruction, behaviour management and assessment. Opportunities for practise are provided in the co-requisite unit - EDN5xx Professional Experience Secondary: Strategies for Effective Teaching undertaken in ST4.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of this unit students are expected to be able to:
1. Analyse a range of instructional strategies and select those most appropriate for their teaching areas and context and the specific needs of secondary school students.
2. Create a plan outlining the teaching strategies they will use for establishing and maintaining a positive learning environment in a secondary teaching context
3. Describe how they would use a range of strategies to prevent challenging student behaviours in a secondary teaching context
4. Describe how they would use a range of strategies to respond to challenging student behaviours in a secondary teaching context
5. Create plans for two consecutive learning experiences in their Major or Minor Teaching Area using two different instructional approaches and corresponding instructional strategies
6. Design assessment instruments for the two consecutive learning experiences in their Major or Minor Teaching Area, which align with the selected instructional approaches and strategies
7. Develop a rationale for the design and implementation of the two consecutive learning and assessment experiences, using theory and research to explain and justify decisions
8. Critically reflect on the design and planning process
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Tutorials: 2 hours per week over 10 weeks|
|Unit Learning Experiences||A flipped classroom approach will be used to study this unit. This involves students accessing and listening to the lecture on-line and completing a weekly learning activity before the tutorial each week. Learning experiences consist of: - Lectures which cover the main concepts, theories and strategies (this will be provided on the LMS ahead of the weekly tutorial) - Interactive workshops, which will include; individual and group reflections, small group activities, group presentations, modelling and deconstruction of teaching and learning strategies, discussion of readings and research articles and informal formative feedback on progress - Completion of weekly readings and research articles - Completion of weekly learning activities

|Assessment||There are two main assessment methods for this unit:
1. Portfolio (90%). This method contains three individual assessment items which include,
(i) classroom management plan,
(ii) plans for teaching with accompanying rationales and assessment instruments, and
(iii) a critical reflection. Formative verbal and written feedback will be given to students from tutor/coordinator on portfolio items throughout the term. Summative written feedback will be provided when marking portfolio items.
2. Weekly learning activities (10%). This method comprises short weekly activities which are designed to help students engage with the topic content and theory presented each week to a secondary teaching context. Summative written and verbal feedback will be provided weekly in each activity submitted.
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Secondary). Successful completion of EDN550 Transition to Teaching, EDN561 Learners and the Learning Environment, and successful completion of / or co-enrolment in EDN582 Literacy and Numeracy in Secondary Education.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
