Professional Experience: Differentiation within Diverse Contexts (EDN611)

Description A professional experience in a primary school context. An on-campus induction is followed by a one week block placements then distributed days (1 day per week for the remainder of the school term) an on-campus concluding session and a SimLab experience. A team-teaching approach to planning, teaching and assessment will be employed. The unit focus is catering for difference in relation to context, content and students. The professional experience provides opportunity for students to contextualise their first year units.

Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/seminars1 x 6hour induction prior to first week of teaching, 1 x 3 hour de-brief workshop
Unit Learning Experiences This is a work integrated learning unit that links theory to practice and highlights the importance of differentiation. A diagnostic approach to teaching, learning and assessing underpins the unit so that pre-service teachers can cater for difference in context, content and students. Observation will be used as an effective research skill to help collect data for reflective practice. A wide range of teaching strategies will be explored, implemented and reviewed: * The unit begins with an induction to the professional experience followed by a one week block and then distributed days (one day per week for the remainder of the term This professional experience exposes the pre-service teachers to opportunities to teach in the class they will have for their final professional experience. During this time the pre-service teacher team-teaching approach will be utilised to gain experience of the planning/teaching and assessment cycle. * Students reflect on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate Level).
Other Learning Experiences One 1 week block placement followed by distributed days (one day per week for the remainder of the term.)1 x 15 minutes SimLab experience
Assessment This unit is assessed on an individual basis in accordance with Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) and Murdoch Graduate Attributes (MGA). The Work Integrated Learning summative assessment report linked to this unit is supervised by a qualified teaching professional within the primary school setting. The summative assessment is submitted at the end of the placement period by the school. Students at risk of failing are identified in the first week and an External Mentor assigned to support, observe and assess throughout the remaining placement.
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Primary), successful completion of all 500 level units, EDN612 Diversity and inclusion, EDN613 Integrated Curriculum in Primary Schools, and successful completion of OR co-enrolment in EDN614 Science in the Primary Curriculum
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EDN611 Professional Internship A: differentiation within Diverse Contexts may not enrol in this unit for credit.
Notes Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances. Information and forms regarding these mandatory requirements can be accessed via the Professional Experience website: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/School-of-Education/Professional-Experience Completion and submission of these mandatory requirements is essential before placements can be arranged.

For students commencing MTeach (Primary) in 2019 this unit will be held in AW7 in 2020 and will be a three week block placement during School Term 2.
Assessment A result of Ungraded Pass or Fail is awarded for this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
