Integrated Curriculum in Primary Schools (HASS/HPE/Arts) (EDN613)

|Description||This unit develops students' knowledge, skills and application in primary curriculum and pedagogy that connects with the lives of children and their communities. The unit examines ways of generating knowledge with children drawing on a range of resources from the curriculum fields of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Arts, and Health and Physical Education. Students will plan, implement and assess an integrated unit of work.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||The Unit Learning Outcomes are aligned with the Course Learning Outcomes for the Master of Teaching and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. Use a range of skills to design a curriculum reflective of the Australian Curriculum (ACARA) and the Western Australian P-10 Syllabus (SCSA) requirements for the Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), the Arts, and Health and Physical Education (HPE);
2. Understand and adopt performance-based learning and assessment strategies to create meaningful and engaging learning experiences;
3. Locate, evaluate and use a range of resources to support curriculum development;
4. Explain and justify curriculum decisions.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures/workshops: 2 hours per week over 9 weeks.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Students undertake a combination of lectures, workshops (including intensive), independent learning. Students conceptualise, plan and implement an integrated primary program. Lectures will provide scaffolding for the broader pedagogical and curriculum principles, values and knowledge relevant to curriculum integration. Topics provide opportunities to prepare planning documents including materials, resources, strategies and assessment. Students will have opportunities to enact programs with real audiences. Students utilise reflective processes to better understand practice with a view to improving it.|

|Assessment||Assessment tasks are based on authentic approaches - real, relevant, connected and rigorous.
Students will gain feedback from peers, participants and academics as a basis for formative and summative assessment tasks.

|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Primary) and successful completion of EDN5501 Transition to Teaching and EDN561 Learners and Learning Environments.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
