Teaching Science Years 11-12 (EDN695)

|Description||This unit encourages students to develop understanding of the principles and practices of teaching and learning in the Science curricula (Year 11-12) in Western Australian secondary schools. Particular attention is given to the structure and content of the upper secondary Science curriculum, teaching strategies, curriculum planning, creation of learning resources and assessment. Through critical analysis and evaluation of curriculum documents, application activities, programming, lesson planning and micro-teaching students gain knowledge, practical skills and expertise for research, professional practice and further learning|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||The following Learning Outcomes are modified extracts from AITSL (2015), Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia, Standards and procedures.
At the completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Provide a rationale for the provision of high quality Year 11-12 Science programs in schools.
2. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the Year 11-12 science curriculum content described by the SCSA , creating programs, lesson plans and activities using a variety of differentiated strategies and resources that cater for inclusive education and student diversity.
3. Generate and maintain supportive and safe learning environments in the science classroom.
4. Develop knowledge and understanding regarding the impact of culture on the education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
5. Appropriately modify teaching resources and pedagogy to cater for students with disability.
6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of various assessment strategies, feedback repertoire, reporting methods to students, parents and other stakeholders in the Year 11-12 Science curriculum context.
7. Engage in planning for professional learning, critiquing a range of resources available for practising teachers in the Year 11-12 science curriculum context through unit experiences.
8. Professionally collaborate with colleagues, teachers and the community in planning effective teaching and learning in the Year 11-12 science context through unit experiences.
9. Interpret, appraise and demonstrate autonomy, expert judgement, adaptability and responsibility in plans to demonstrate universal design and ethical practices as a teaching practitioner
|Timetabled Learning Activities||1 x Lecture per week, 1 x 2 hour lab per week|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Students attend or view a one hour lecture and complete a two-hour lab each week. Lectures in this unit are interactive and involve demonstrations and learning activities. Concepts from all lectures, workshops, readings and tasks aim to provide the foundation of quality teaching in upper secondary school Science teaching. Blended learning in the form of lectures, face-to-face workshops and on-line self-directed study (internals) or online workshops, on-line discussions, collaborate sessions and self-directed study (externals) will be used for a practical application approach that will develop key understandings and provide opportunities to apply concepts to teaching in a contemporary and differentiated way. Modelling of teaching strategies will be implemented to enhance learning experiences.
Embedded within the unit are opportunities to discuss teaching and learning with a practising teacher/s.
|Other Learning Experiences||Excursion: Visitation/s to a Year 11-12 high school science class, with scope for developing the Murdoch University Adjunct Program.
Incursion: Nelsonnet publishing company representative demonstrating online resources linked to Nelson textbooks that provide specific resources for teachers
Professional Learning Access: free membership to STAWA and access to resources and journal for final year Science Education students
|Assessment||There are four assessment components in this unit:
· Assessment 1 (20%) - Microteaching demonstration
· Assessment 2 (30%) - Interactive teaching resource
· Assessment 3 (40%) - Program planning
· Assessment 4 (10%) - Quizzes
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Secondary), and successful completion of EDN595 Teaching Science Year 7 - 10.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
