Teaching Science Years 11-12 (EDN695)

|Description||This unit encourages students to develop a practical and critical understanding of the principles and practices of teaching and learning in the Science curricula (Year 11-12) in Western Australian secondary schools. Particular attention is given to the structure and content of the upper secondary Science curriculum, teaching strategies, curriculum planning, creation of learning resources and assessment. Through critical analysis and evaluation of curriculum documents, application activities, programming, lesson planning and micro-teaching students gain knowledge, practical skills and expertise.|

At the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Provide a rationale for the provision of quality Year 11-12 Science programs in schools.
2. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of Year 11-12 secondary school students and how they learn through Science -specific lesson planning, resource design and enactment of teaching.
3. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of Year 11-12 SCIENCE curriculum content described by the Western Australian School and Curriculum Standards Authority (WASCSA) and how to teach it in sequenced lesson planning, resource design and enactment of teaching.
4. Create lesson plans and activities using a variety of differentiated reproductive and productive teaching strategies and resources that cater for student diversity.
5. Proactively create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge's, literacy and numeracy strategies and the use of ICT
through context-specific lesson planning, resource design and enactment of teaching.
6. Demonstrate a range of assessment strategies, ways of providing appropriate feedback, interpreting student data and reporting to students, parents and other stakeholders in the Year 11-12 Science curriculum context in assignment tasks, lesson planning and enactment of teaching.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of assessment strategies, a comprehensive feedback repertoire and school-based reporting of student learning in assignment tasks, lesson planning and enactment of teaching.
8. Engage in professional learning, critiquing a range of resources available for ongoing professional learning in the Year 11-12 Science curriculum context through unit and practicum experiences.
9. Engage professionally with colleagues, teachers, parents/carers and the community that can assist in planning and implementing effective teaching and learning in the Year 11-12 Science context through unit and practicum experiences.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||1 x Lecture per week, 1 x 2 hour lab per week|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Students attend or view a one hour lecture and complete a two-hour lab each week. Lectures in this unit are interactive and involve demonstrations and learning activities. Concepts from all lectures, workshops, readings and tasks aim to provide the foundation of quality teaching in upper secondary school Science teaching. Blended learning in the form of lectures, face-to-face workshops and on-line self-directed study (internals) or online workshops, on-line discussions, collaborate sessions and self-directed study (externals) will be used for a practical application approach that will develop key understandings and provide opportunities to apply concepts to teaching in a contemporary and differentiated way. Modelling of teaching strategies will be implemented to enhance learning experiences.
Embedded within the unit are opportunities to discuss teaching and learning with a practising teacher/s.
|Assessment||There are three assessment components in this unit:
Assignment 1 (30%). Microteaching
Assignment 2 (40%).
Option A: Critical analysis of contemporary existing practice
Option B: Create an interactive teaching resource for a unit of work linked to the syllabus.
Assignment 3 (30%). Planning a Program
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Secondary), and successful completion of EDN595 Teaching Science Year 7 - 10.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
