|Description||The unit engages with the texts of William Shakespeare and his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, John Fletcher, and Aphra Behn, and considers their relevance today. The unit covers significant texts and genres from the early modern era, and explores theoretical approaches including new historicism, cultural materialism, postcolonialism and feminism. Theatre students may participate in a production of one of the texts studied. English and Creative Writing students will test their knowledge through different forms of writing and in-class engagement.|

1. Demonstrate familiarity with and critical and applied skills in relation to a range of theatrical and performative texts.
2. Draw on the techniques and skills derived from practice-based and/or theoretical engagement to examine a range of texts; responding critically and creatively, either through production-focused and dramaturgically sophisticated projects (workshop) or through extended discursive investigations (tutorial), to philosophical, social and ethical issues.
3. Demonstrate appropriate use of techniques for researching, planning and producing analytically or critically advanced assessments that convey a knowledge of cultural contexts and technologies.
Demonstrate an understanding of a range of dramatic and theatrical texts in relation to genre, mode and style, analysing how literary and creative texts are shaped historically..

|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit uses a combination of lectures, tutorials and workshops under the direction and facilitation of the unit coordinator and tutors. Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of early modern theatre, specifically through examining the work of Shakespeare. Pathways to this understanding are offered in both the practical workshop, where the texts are explored through performance, or in the tutorial where the plays are discussed and critically analysed.|

|Assessment||Assessments are designed to give students the opportunity to develop, consolidate and extend their knowledge and understanding of the key ideas, texts and theories covered in the unit. They also test the students' capacity to perform early modern texts in a contemporary social context, while creatively applying their skills in areas of acting, dramaturgy and technical production. They are also designed to extend students' capacity to develop rigorous arguments and discussions (orally and in writing), to develop skills of independent research, and to develop confidence in working with primary and secondary materials. Note that internal students are organised into two streams: Reading and analysis (tutorial) and Performance (workshop)|
|Exclusions||Students who have previously completed EGL348 Shakespeare may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
