Writing for Performance (EGL250)

|Description||This unit provides theatre and creative writing students with theories, skills and experience in the writing of scripts for live performance. Students will be offered models of dramaturgical and performance writing and genres and will be guided in reading and interpreting these. They will develop skills in scriptwriting, close critical reading and analysis and will develop an understanding of the relationships between texts and contexts|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Demonstrate substantive knowledge of a range of modes of writing for dramatic and performative texts and an understanding of the social and cultural significance of these texts.
2. Critically analyse, interpret and produce texts in a range of genres and from different cultural contexts.
3. Harness the techniques and skills derived from practice-based and theoretical engagement with dramatic, theatrical and performance texts to explore philosophical, social and ethical issues in the 'imagined' public arena and to reflect these in writing practice.
4. Demonstrate an increased proficiency in developing performance and writing skills as a means for communicating with readers or audiences across cultural boundaries.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lecture 1 hour per week: Workshops 1.5 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit combines lectures and workshops. To refine writing skills practice is essential; therefore, students will discuss a range of approaches to scriptwriting and then use the material they have learned to assist them in the development of their own scripts (of various sorts). They will be asked to reflect critically on the material presented and to engage in a constructive way with the work of others. They will carry out a number of written tasks in class as well as independently. Students will be expected to demonstrate their grasp of a range of writing techniques and styles and to develop their own unique approach to the form they select.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Exposure to a range of online writing samples from various genres where appropriate.|
|Assessment||Assessments are designed to develop the students' capacity to produce dramaturgical texts that engage with their cultural and social context in a creative and critical way. They are also designed to extend students' capacity to develop rigorous arguments and discussions (orally and in writing), to develop skills of independent research, and to develop confidence in working with primary and secondary materials.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
