Circuits and Systems I (ENG125)

Description This unit provides the necessary skills for the analysis of direct current (DC) electrical circuits and systems. In particular it is concerned with the study of fundamentals of electricity, DC circuits, nodal and mesh analysis, superposition and linearity, network laws and theorems, capacitors and inductors, operational amplifiers and their applications, basic RL, RC and RLC circuits and associated natural and forced responses.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the fundamental principles which govern DC systems, and be able to apply these principles to the solution of practical engineering problems.
2. Use computational aids in solving electrical problems.
3. Build, analyse and test electrical elements and DC circuits.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 x 1 hour per week; seminars: 1 x 1 hour per week; workshops: 1 x 1 hour per week; laboratories: 1 x 3 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences Learning in this unit relies heavily on students preparing for and engaging in a variety of learning activities including laboratories and workshops. Every week, a lecture introduces theoretical aspects which are applied in a seminar, directly followed by a workshop were groups of students discuss and solve problems on whiteboards. Small group and interactive learning and teaching activities in this unit are also facilitated through laboratory sessions. Pre-reading and preparation is critical for the effective participation in seminar, workshop and laboratory sessions. Students should spend at least 4 hours outside the formal class times per week performing the required reading, preparing and revisiting workshop problems, working through assignment questions and on laboratory exercises.

Workshop and laboratory sessions, where students are engaged in problem solving and practical exercises form a key part of the unit (satisfactory laboratory completion and participation is mandatory to pass the unit). This aligns closely with the core unit outcomes associated with gaining an understanding of fundamental DC system principles and building, analysing and testing DC circuits. Close interaction with tutors allows for immediate feedback during these sessions. Participation and completion of exercises in these sessions is assessed and contributes towards the final mark. Furthermore, understanding and application of fundamental principles is assessed through assignment, test and final examination.
Prerequisites Corequisite: MAS182 Applied Mathematics or MAS161 Calculus and Matrix Algebra.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
