Introduction to the Minerals Industry (ENG193)

Description The Earth's origin and dynamic nature are covered within the context of plate tectonics, mineral deposits and ores found within its crust. The interplay of the economics of the mineral resource sector and the energy and industrial emissions involved in recovery and processing are explored. Major unit operations of mineral processing, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical flowsheets, financial management, occupational health and safety, sustainability and environmental aspects in the local/global mineral industry are discussed.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit the student should be able to:
1. Apply basic chemistry, physics and mathematics to mineral resource processing and flow sheets.
2. Understand the fundamental Earth dynamics and geological processes as applied to the origin of resource deposits in order to better appreciate the extractive techniques employed to extract various metal commodities commonly processed within the mineral resource sector.
3. Gain a general insight to the extraction and refinement processes involved in comminution, pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy.
4. Learn the fundamental economic and financial considerations that impact the mineral resource sector.
5. Gain knowledge of the importance of occupational, safety and health (O H & S) concerns of employers and employees.
6. Develop an insight into the use of energy in industry and the impacts of the basic laws of thermodynamics on sustainability and environmental issues facing the mineral resource sector today.
7. Be prepared to take subsequent courses in mineral science and extractive metallurgy.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 3 hours per week.
External: Internet access required.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit includes lecture, group discussion along with assignments and mid-term tests. Students are encouraged to discuss topics with the lecturer as well as fellow students.

Final Examination - Invigilated (Closed Book / 3 hours) 50%
Student must achieve a 50% or better mark on exam to pass the unit.
Prerequisites Nil. Knowledge of physical sciences at senior high school level is assumed.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EXM131 Introduction to Extractive Metallurgy may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
