Engineering Thermodynamics (ENG202)

Description Basic concepts in thermodynamics for steady and unsteady systems, forms of energy and equations of state; properties of pure substances, phase diagrams and phase transitions. Pure components and solutions. Gibbs free energy, fugacity and activity, phase equilibria, electrochemical equilibria. Chemical reaction equilibria. First law of thermodynamics and applications - mass and energy balances in open and closed systems. Entropy and second law of thermodynamics, energy; typical engineering case studies.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 x 2 hours and 1 x 1 hour per week; workshop: 1 x 1 hour per week; laboratories: 1 x 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The objectives of this unit are to make you familiar with the basic equations that embody the laws of thermodynamics and enable you to complete a number of set exercises which relate to thermodynamic problems. In addition, a number of laboratory sessions will be held to provide you with hands on experience and a solid understanding using a set of laboratory experiments concerning the measurement of thermodynamic quantities. Therefore, the primary purpose of the assignments in this unit is to give you practice in working out thermodynamic problems. You will be expected to answer the given questions on time and as thoroughly as possible. An important aspect of these assignments is to encourage serious individual effort and class participation, and not to reward work done by rote. Students must clearly show the steps involved in solving all assignment problems.
Assessment Assessment for both internal and external students in this unit will be based on the combined marks in each of the following categories listed:
(i) mid-semester test 10%,
(ii) 3 assignments 10%,
(iii) final examination (closed book) 50%,
(iv) laboratory work 30%.
Assignments are associated with the material from each of the taught Blocks.
To achieve a pass in the unit you must pass the final examination by achieving minimum 50% on the final examination paper, satisfactorily complete the laboratory section, and achieve a total of minimum 50% as a combined mark.
Students will submit assessment items electronically to the tutor and receive feedback through email or LMS. The final examination will contain questions similar to those studied in the assignments.
Prerequisites Completion of all Part I units in the majors Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Mineral Science.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed the unit PEC201/CHE201 Thermodynamics may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
