Power Electronic Converters and Systems (ENG318)

Description This unit introduces power electronic circuits, converters and systems. It covers power semiconductor devices, ac-dc, dc-dc, dc-ac and ac-ac converters. Industrial applications of power electronic systems will be also presented.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. To understand a range of semiconductor devices, used in power electronic systems.
2. To understand some power electronics-based converters.
3. To understand the application and control of power electronics-based converters.
4. To analyse, demonstrate and design some power electronic converters.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lecture: 1 x 2 hour session per week; Workshop: 1 x 2 hour session per week; Laboratory: 1 x 3 hour session per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The unit relies heavily on independent study with all unit material available on LMS. A two-hour lecture and a two-hour workshop provide you with the opportunity to review important concepts with the lecturer and tutor and discuss a number of problems related to the study program. An important part of the unit is the three-hour laboratory sessions where you have the opportunity to explore a range of power electronic circuits through simulation studies. It is essential that students engage in all three activities if they are to obtain the full benefit from this unit. It is to be noted that workshops and laboratories do not run on every week and their schedules will be announced during the semester through LMS announcements.
Assessment Laboratory 20%; Assignment 20%; Final Examination 40%; and Mid-semester test 20%

The laboratory sessions will be assessed on the basis of your competency and understanding in the completion of the laboratory exercises. The Assignment requires the students working in groups. Each student should participate in the complete process, all students should agree upon what needs to be done and who should perform the tasks. You should discuss the tasks and check each other. A final examination will be held during the examinations period at the end of the semester while a mid-semester test will be held in the middle of the semester.
Prerequisites ENG297/243 Circuits and Systems II AND ENG207/262 Principles of Electronic Instrumentation.
Exclusions ENG349 Power Electronic Converters and Systems.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
