|Description||This unit provides knowledge of and practical experience deploying industrial instrumentation networks. It considers various types of sensor, their characteristics and how they communicate through analogue and digital media. Topics include: sensor technologies for measuring pressure, flow, load, temperature and level; their integration in distributed control systems; analogue signalling, serial and parallel digital communication; digital networks, addressing and protocols; established industrial field-bus technologies and their applications in the building control, process and transport industries.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the fundamental principles and technology associated with DCS systems.
2. Have specific knowledge of a wide range of sensor and industrial automation networking protocols and standards.
3. Be able to design, code, debug and test a simple DCS using communication electronics and LabView.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 x 2 hours per week; Workshops: 1 x 2 hours per week; Laboratories: 1 x4 hours per week.|
|Assessment||Students will be assessed on the basis of group research reports; individual verbal class presentations; individual laboratory performance; and individual written and practical tests.|
|Prerequisites||ENG207 Principles of Electronic Instrumentation; ENG294 Discrete Time Systems.|
|Exclusions||ENG345 Instrument and Communication Systems.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
