Engineering Finance, Management and Law (ENG336)

Description This unit provides exposure to a range of generic skills and knowledge required for professional engineering practice. To operate effectively engineers require some knowledge of project finance, management of human and financial resources, and the law. Theory and practice of finance, management, copyright, contract and tort law will be examined in the context of typical engineering scenarios. Students will work in groups and individually on research projects. This unit has a strong focus on presentation and justification of results.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand aspects of contract law, law of torts, intellectual property and workplace issues.
2. Apply the ethics of your Engineering Profession in all your activities.
3. Analyse business cases.
4. Work in teams.
5. Understand and construct strategies for growth.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lecture/Presentation: 1 x 2 hours per week; Workshop/Tutorial: 1 x 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit is taught by external domain experts who are able to illustrate the theory with examples drawn from their professional experience. The teaching style differs from other technical engineering units in that it relies more heavily on analysis and discussion of case studies. Students undertake a significant element of background reading, via the LMS system, and work individually and in groups on research assignments; for instance, the development and financial modelling of a proposed engineering project or an analysis of the implications of an established court ruling.
Assessment The unit will be taught as three separate segments of about 4 weeks each with independent assessment. Given the collaborative nature of professional engineering practice, students will be assessed via group reports. However the more theoretic (and general) knowledge imparted in the lectures will also be assessed via tests. The unit coordinator will work with the three 'domain experts' to harmonise the assessment items so that students get a reasonable mix of individual/group and essay/test assessment in accordance with the assessment policy.
Prerequisites Nil.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed ENG417 Engineering Studio: Law, Management and Ethics OR ENG453 Engineering Law, Management and Ethics may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
