Wind and Hydro Power Systems (ENG339)

Description This unit provides students with an understanding of both wind power and hydro power systems. The first part of the unit consists of 8 lectures on different aspects of wind technology, backed by laboratory/field work involving the use of state-of-the-art industry programs for assessing the wind resource, designing turbines and planning wind installations. The second part of the unit consists of 4 lectures and associated laboratories on the planning, design and integration of hydro power systems.
Unit Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this unit student should be able to:
1. Conduct a wind resource assessment using both experimental measurement and computational simulation
2. Demonstrate their knowledge of the aerodynamic and dynamic loads on wind turbines and explain how this knowledge is used in the design and manufacture of wind turbines
3. Discuss different power configurations of wind turbines as well as different methods to control wind turbine operation
4. Discuss the key aspects involved in planning, designing, installing and operating wind farms
5. Demonstrate familiarity with the approaches used in conducting a resource assessment for a potential hydropower installation
6. Size a micro hydro system for a particular resource and load and give recommendations for the type of system required
7. Discuss the issues involved with integration of hydro systems on an electricity gri.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lecture/Workshop: 1 x 3 hours per week (notionally 2 hours of lecture and 1 hour tutorial); Laboratories: 1 x 3 hours per week, except for Week 1.
Unit Learning Experiences Each week, a lecture introduces theoretical aspects that are then applied and investigated further in learning activities consisting of quizzes, laboratories, tutorials, a group project and a group presentation. Pre-reading and preparation is critical for effective participation, in tutorials, laboratory sessions and group activities. Students should spend at least 4 hours outside the formal class times per week performing the required reading, preparing and revisiting tutorial problems and laboratory exercises, and performing group work.
An LMS site will be used to provide details of the activities and also to allow discussion of issues that arise during the unit via Forums on this LMS site.
Assessment The assessment for this unit comprises of the following elements:
* Wind resource assessment project (20%).
* Laboratories (20%)
* Group Presentation (10%)
* Online Quizzes (10%):
* Examination (40%) This open book exam, tests the understanding, knowledge and analytical skills developed in the unit.
Prerequisites PEN120 General Physics or PEN152 Principles of Physics and BEN100 Transitioning into Engineering and ENG297 Circuits and Systems II.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
