Chemical Engineering Design II (ENG413)

|Description||Students learn to apply the principles of chemical engineering design at pre-feasibility stage including project planning, management, process design, flowsheet development, equipment selection, OHE&S and cost analysis. A written report and oral defense covering all project aspects will be submitted by each student team working on a specified chemical process.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to
(ULO1) design a chemical process and plant at a concept level of complexity that includes a process flow diagram (PFD) and equipment, and mass and energy balances generated using appropriate software;
(ULO2) Outline specific environmental, and occupational health and safety (OH&S) issues for the project, addressing the sustainability and social issues relevant to the design project.
(ULO3) demonstrate an ability to deal with uncertainty in a professional context, demonstrate sound judgment and justification in the process selection, and equipment selection and sizing, to a particular project, based on the use of published information, prior knowledge and other sources.
(ULO4) develop effective communication skills through written reports at a professional level that demonstrate knowledge of client requirements and effective use of presentation of data, i.e. appropriate use of tables and figures, correct grammar, spelling and punctuation; conduct a professional-level technical presentation including the use of electronic visual aids such as PowerPoint.
(ULO5) build teamwork and interpersonal skills by work productively, both as an individual and as a team member.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Meeting: 1 x 2 hours per week meeting with design lead.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Working in teams, students will tackle a sequence of design tasks reflecting real-world practice. They will submit a series of episodic reports that build to their final design project proposal submission. Students will apply all of their accumulated technical and professional skills to assess the financial return of the proposed chemical process design. Due regard to operational safety and environmental impact will be given at the preliminary design stage, minimizing negative impacts. Students will workshop with a range of academic and industry leads for each episode of the design project.
|Assessment||This unit is linked with ENG412 Chemical Engineering Design I, forming a sequence of integrated reports submissions.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
