Instrumentation and Control Systems Design (ENG445)

Description This unit introduces concepts in advanced control design and implementation. A number of control design methodologies will be studied and their implementation into Engineering facilities will be investigated.
A number of professional and industrial software packages are used to design and implement the appropriate control systems. Important issues around performance, efficiency and safety of operation are integrated into the project. Communication and team work are important attributes that students would be expected to develop.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Perform interaction analysis
2. Identify the most appropriate control structure for an interacting process based on interaction analysis
3. Design and implement decouplers
4. Design and implement Generic Model Control
5. Design and implement Dynamic Matrix Control
6. Research and identify the most suitable and comprehensive control performance measures, to be used for thorough performance analysis of different types of controllers.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/workshops: 1 x 4 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences Although this unit almost follows the traditional lecture-tutorial style of teaching; the onus of learning is on you, the student. You will work in a group to conduct research, solve design problems, perform a thorough analysis of your design, make presentations and develop reports. The expectation is for this group to evolve into a team. The team processes of meetings, project schedules, exchange of technical information, conflict resolution and assessment submissions will be closely monitored. You are expected to work towards scheduled assessments as a team using the unit coordinator/instructor as a facilitator. Facilitation will not be restricted to scheduled class times and could use email. The weekly classes should be exploited to discuss troublesome issues or key concepts.
Assessment Assessment in the unit is as follows:
Two written technical reports: 35%
Presentations: 25%
Final Examination: 40%
Prerequisites ENG303/ENG308 Advanced Process and Instrumentation Engineering, ENG304/ENG309 Process Control Engineering I and ENG346/ENG322 Process Control Engineering II.
Exclusions Students who have previously passed ENG420 Instrumentation and Control Systems Design may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
