Process Control and Safety Systems (ENG446)

Organisational Unit Engineering and Energy
Credit Points 3
Availability MURDOCH: S1-internal
Teaching Timetables Murdoch S1
Description This unit is one of two complementary units in the Instrumentation and Control Engineering course. It provides further knowledge and understanding of the subsystems and processes which make up an entire process control system. Some of these include startup, shutdown and emergency procedures and sequences; HAZOPS and LOPA; instrumentation systems, functional safety, safety controllers and systems. An important aspect of this unit is site visits to working industrial plants, to put the material into perspective.
Unit Learning Outcomes At the completion of this unit students are expected to have an understanding and appreciation of
1. HAZOPS
2. Process and Functional Safety
3. LOPA
4. Philosophical, methodological and economic perspective of a Control System
5. Group Work and Communication
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/workshops: 1 x 4 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit is taught by experts in industry with first had experience in the specialised areas. In addition to bringing an enthusiasm and motivation to this unit, many examples are provided to the students through personal application of the techniques studied in this unit plus the experience and knowledge possessed by the presenters in an industrial setting.
Assessment 15% of the aggregate is concerned with workshop participation; 25% of the aggregate is concerned with reports/assignments and 60% of the aggregate is concerned with formal topic assessment in the form of tests. The breakdown of this final component in terms of individual tests is in direct proportion to the number of weeks spent on each topic.
Prerequisites ENG303/308 Advanced Process Engineering
ENG304/309 Process Control Engineering I

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
