Environmental Engineering Design and Innovation (ENG452)

Description In this unit, students are exposed to the innovation process and a design task that leads to practical implementation. In partnership with industry students define a project, develop a solution and present this by means of modelling, graphically, in writing and verbally. Throughout the unit students are expected to develop skills of creative problem-solving, project management, options analysis, energy and water balance modelling, product design, technical drawing, graphical representation, systems engineering, report writing and oral presentation.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Undertake an innovation project and the necessary engineering design practice to produce a team solution for an engineering project
2. Present the team's project plans and outcomes using a professional engineering standard to others in the scientific and broader community
3. Work effectively in a team
4. Use a basic project management process
Timetabled Learning Activities Workshop: 1 x 3 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit introduces students to the world of innovation and engineering design by completing a substantial project in Environmental Engineering. Taking this unit students learn to prepare a plan for a design task, to manage the plan, to work in a team, to test then report the design work and demonstrate a level of mastery of the project area. In other words the main objective is guiding students to undertake the necessary design practice to produce a solution for the set task. Eventually students are able to prepare a visual representation of the proposed design and the technical reports in a professional manner and orally present the work with great confidence. There will be substantial exposure to professional practice by working with an industry partner to solve a particular problem. This will include initial start-up meetings with the 'client', site visits, guest lectures from the industry partners and presentation of the work in progress and final design solution to the 'client'. Examples from previous years are: waste management plan for Christmas Island, constructed wetland for wastewater polishing treatment for Water Corporation in Denmark, stormwater treatment cell for the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River and a waste-to-energy plant for Perth Airport.
Other Learning Experiences Field trip (x2) activities will occur during the timetabled workshop sessions.
Assessment Assessments include a mix of feedback from the industry supervisor during site meetings and written feedback from the academic supervisor on the three tasks: project proposal, progress report, poster and presentation. Feedback from the academic and industry supervisors includes a scoring sheet versus set criteria. Verbal feedback by supervisors during workshops is available to improve the assessed tasks.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
