Research Project and Thesis (ENG458)

Description On successful completion of this unit students will be able to plan, execute and report on a research project; select and make a process design of an appropriate metallurgical process for the profitable extraction of a metal/mineral on the basis of the results of the research; enumerate and discuss critical operating procedures of the chosen process; and produce a preliminary economic feasibility study. Students will prepare a thesis on their topic and present a seminar.
Timetabled Learning Activities Seminars/tutorials: 1 per week; project meetings: as arranged by Supervisor but students should expect a minimum of 1 per week.
Prerequisites EXM301 Mineral Processing, EXM302 Advanced Mineral Processing, EXM357 Extractive Metallurgy.
Notes Students must complete the Safety in Science course prior to undertaking this unit. The Safety in Science course is usually run in the week before semester begins but students are urged to communicate with their proposed supervisor on the precise timing. All projects must be approved by the Unit Coordinator prior to the beginning of semester.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
