Communications, Measurement and Control (ENG608)

|Description||This unit provides a review of industrial communications technologies and provides both the knowledge and skills necessary for designing and implementing a computer based measurement and control system. Emphasis is upon PC based data acquisition and control, but some exposure to remote I/O is also provided. Although some theoretical concepts are addressed, emphasis is upon the development of practical skills and problem solving with LabVIEW being used as the primary vehicle.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Have specific knowledge of a wide range of industrial automation networking protocols and standards.
2. Explain the concept and describe the capabilities of a range of embedded and realtime systems
3. Describe and explain the type and range of types of physical I/O associated with a range of systems
4. Describe, explain and quantify the different types of typical signals and the requirements and limitations of measuring each
5. Gain specific experience with using LabVIEW for computer based measurement, analysis and communication
6. Configure and use DAQ-based systems to perform measurement, analysis, logging and control
7. Analyse, design and implement a range of small DAQ based applications
8. Be able to ascertain, define and solve problems appropriate to the above technical areas
9. Be able to work effectively in small groups
10. Be able to effectively communicate the above technical information using both written and verbal skills.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Laboratory/Workshop: 2 x 4 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Each week a different topic is studied in a workshop/laboratory setting using computer based hardware and software.
The approach to learning in this unit primarily follows a studio style of learning whereby the specialised industrial computer systems facility is open to the student 24/7. These facilities include dedicated computers attached to specialised electrical panels with measurement and control equipment. Informal lectures and formal workshops are used to introduce the main topics, while interactions between students and staff occurs at a more informal level, with staff regularly visiting the facility. This is a very practically oriented unit so students are encouraged to talk, help and work with each other on all aspects of the unit.
|Other Learning Experiences||Major projects are expected to be completed outside formal class time, but using the specialised laboratory facilities which are available 24/7. These projects provide an opportunity for students to develop project management skills, group interaction and communication, design, development and testing skills.|
|Assessment||This unit involves 3 practical/written tests (60%) which are used to assess the knowledge and skills developed within the unit. To facilitate the development of this knowledge and skills there are regular practical workshops (10%), using the specialised facilities in the dedicated laboratory. These are facilitated in order to provide a sequenced and coherent learning experience, which is an important requirement in this area of study. An important aspect of the unit is also group, project and communications skills, so this is encouraged and developed through group project work (30%), which involves a group written report, verbal presentation and demonstration of the project.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Master of Engineering or the Master of Engineering and MBA or Master of Engineering and MIT.|
|Notes||Students are expected to have experience in at least one programming language from a technical perspective. Ideally some experience in LabVIEW is preferred. Additionally, fundamental knowledge of electrical circuits and electronics is assumed.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
