Engineering Masters Project (ENG615)

Description This project will address a problem of industrial significance, and will involve many aspects associated with the chosen Master of Engineering specialisation. Students will be expected to undertake the analysis, development and upgrade of a significant project. This project may require the student to be stationed at an industrial site.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. Search for, identify and summarise relevant information from published literature and other sources about a set task.
2. Specify a design task and put it into context.
3. Apply your knowledge and problem solving skills in a creative way to work towards a solution for a set task.
4. Produce and implement a solution/design for a given task.
5. Test your solution/design and analyse your results.
6. Report on the objective, background and results of your work, its analysis and evaluation in a verbal presentation and in form of a substantial report.
Timetabled Learning Activities Meetings/laboratories: by arrangement with the Project Supervisor.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit exposes students to engineering design or research through the implementation of a substantial project in the chosen Master of Engineering specialisation. Students are expected to independently work on an assigned project. Depending on the set task, the work includes examination, analysis and report on a design, the necessary research to undertake a design, the application of design practices to produce a solution and the presentation of results and findings through both verbal and written presentations. Weekly meetings with project supervisors allow for feedback, input and project progress monitoring.
Assessment Assessment tasks in this unit are aligned with typical engineering project tasks and skills including planning, research tasks, progress reporting, design and problem solving, analysis and presentation of results. Assessment tasks and associated feedback also provide students with opportunities to improve on their oral presentation and technical report writing skills. Specifically the assessment items consist of:
1. A Project Plan
2. A Progress Presentation
3. A Final Report
4. A 40 min Seminar Presentation
5. Project Assessment

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
