Description This unit builds upon previous studies in industrial computer based systems associated with the acquisition, processing and analysis of signals. The unit uses a project based approach to provide an opportunity to explore the specification, design, commissioning and testing phases of typical systems development and upgrades. A variety of systems will be used including pilot plant SCADA like systems and standalone control systems.
Unit Learning Outcomes At the completion of this unit, students should have an excellent understanding, appreciation, objectives and practical experience in regards to:
1. Phases of development in typical, but small, engineering projects
2. Requirements for group oriented projects
3. Change notes and appropriate documentation for each phase of a project, including both the minimum quantity and quality
4. Leadership skills in organisation of small groups to achieve the required objectives
5. Formal presentations of progress status and results of group work
6. Safety Aspects associated with equipment, specific practical work and attitude.
7. To acquire knowledge and understanding of a variety of topics important to industrial computer systems projects.
Timetabled Learning Activities Weekly class wide workshop plus meetings by arrangement with the Unit Coordinator.
Unit Learning Experiences The learning in this unit, mostly revolves around group work, but also has a strong individual component. Most notably, group leaders and the projects rotate regularly throughout the semester. So all students get a chance at leading a group, together with the formal responsibility of reporting the progress, status, issues, description, approaches etc. associated with practically oriented projects. All phases of a project are experienced from functional specification, design, commissioning, testing and maintenance. The second interlaced component of the unit is associated with research topics. Documentation, including collection, developing, maintaining and handing over, are all important aspects of the unit..
Assessment 30% of the aggregate is concerned with the assessment of personal skills such as leadership, presentation, usage of technical terms and communication. As group work and the development of technical problem solving and design skills is important 20% of the aggregate is dedicated to regular group project work and reports. To further the development of research into technical areas and communication about these areas, 20% of the aggregate goes towards group research topic work.
Finally, to assess the gain in knowledge of both the processes and knowledge developed in this unit, there is a final exam worth 30%.
Prerequisites ENG501 PLC Applications; ENG502 Computer Based Measurement and Control; ENG564 Industrial Instrumentation Technologies. Enrolment in the Master of Engineering.
Exclusions Students who have previously completed ENG447 Industrial Computer Systems Design may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
