Coastal and Marine Management (ENV333)

Organisational Unit Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Credit Points 3
Availability MURDOCH: S2-internal (quota of 60 places)
Teaching Timetables Murdoch S2
Description This unit explores current coastal and marine management issues, policies and practices by focusing on the diverse habitats represented along the Australian coastline. Emphasis is placed on the use of spatial data and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology. Practicals include detection and monitoring of coastal change using remote sensing imagery, coastal resource inventories, habitat mapping and assessment of vulnerability in planning for coastal development.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. An understanding of coastal and marine management issues, policies and practices in Australia
2. Elementary competency in using Geographical Information Systems technology and remote sensing for coastal management
3. Improved information synthesis and report writing skills
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 2 hours per week; practical work: 3 hours per week for eight weeks.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit combines lectures and laboratory sessions to build competency in coastal and marine management. The lectures provide the theoretical component and a suite of computer-based sessions use GIS as a tool to investigate various coastal management scenarios. In a self-directed assignment, you will also have the opportunity to explore the impacts of, and mitigation for, a particular coastal development and prepare a consultant's report in a specified format.
Assessment 50% Examination on content of lectures, laboratory material and readings.
30% Consultant's report on impacts and mitigation of a coastal development.
20% GIS laboratory report to demonstrate competency in use of GIS for coastal management.
Prerequisites CHE144 Foundations of Chemistry/PEC144 Chemical Principles, ENV242/ENV213 Atmospheric Science, ENV244/ENV282 Oceanography and Marine Pollution and BIO384 Marine and Estuarine Biology/BIO377 Marine Ecology
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed ENV381 Coastal and Marine Management may not enrol in this unit for credit.
Quota This unit is subject to quota. Quota is due to limited laboratory space. Selection is based on academic achievement in ENV244 Oceanography and Marine Pollution.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
