Description This unit provides a conceptual background to the design and implementation of environmental monitoring programs, and practical experience in the collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting of monitoring data. The unit considers physical, chemical, biological and social monitoring; and short and long term programs. Geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing are given special attention. While lectures provide background material, practical sessions are focused on applications using varied examples and data sets including use of the GIS software.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Critically review an existing monitoring program.
2. Design and implement a new monitoring program.
3. Be able to design a monitoring program using remote sensing and/or other spatial data in the framework of a Geographic Information System (GIS).
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 2 hours per week; laboratories/tutorials: 3 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit requires students to become competent in the theoretical and practical tasks required for the design and implementation of environmental monitoring programs. This is achieved through structured and self-paced learning modules. The series of lectures aim to provide an awareness of the different approaches and methodologies currently or potentially available for monitoring the environment. Students engage with current literature on the topic through Journal Discussions (assessed). Another component of assessment gives students experience in designing a new environmental monitoring program. Self-paced modules based on GIS software expose the students to a range of data sets and analysis tools available for monitoring programs especially for large, landscape-scale projects. A range of learning tools including computer laboratory sessions, website fora, and pre-lab demonstrations are provided for the students.
Assessment There are three assessments students complete during semester (weighted equally and combined as 60% of the overall assessment) and an end of semester exam (40%). Three assessments to be completed during semester are: Journal Discussion, GIS/Remote sensing problem solving set of exercises using computer software. The third assignment is set around the task of designing a monitoring program using specified framework. Final exam tests students knowledge of the principles of sampling design, monitoring frameworks, indicators and specific applications covered during semester. Assignments will be marked by the teaching team and feedback provided as needed by the unit coordinators, on request.
Prerequisites Enrolment in Bachelor Environmental Science or Bachelor Marine Science or Graduate Certificate in Environmental Science or Graduate Certificate in Protected Area Administration or Graduate Diploma in Energy and the Environment or Graduate Diploma in Environmental Science.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed ENV505 Environmental Monitoring may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
