Climate Change Adaptation: Ecosystems and Societies (ENV680)

Description The consequences of climate change are increasingly felt at regional, national and local scales, and already adaptation strategies have begun to spell out the changes needed to cope. This unit explores the areas in which adaptation will be required and the processes by which change occurs in ecosystems and societies. It uses case studies from a variety of sectors and countries to provide a broad understanding of approaches which can assist us to meet the challenges posed by climate change.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the process of adaptation in ecosystems and societies
2. Identify adaptation and maladaptation to climate change in ecosystems and societies
3. Understand and begin to apply tools for climate change adaptation and adaptation planning
4. Identify the elements of successful climate change adaptation
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshops 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is mainly individual, self-directed learning. The unit is structured around a series of topics looking at the areas where climate change adaptation is required, the processes by which adaptation occurs and how adaptation can be deliberately facilitated for positive outcomes for societies and ecosystems. Each topic is described on LMS and students locate and download the readings from scholarly journals or websites. LMS provides a range of other materials including films and websites. Weekly lectures are recorded and slides are provided via LMS so that external students can watch the lectures if they are not able to attend on campus. Weekly workshops discuss the topics and involve group discussions and analysis of materials provided. Summaries of the workshops are provided on LMS for external students. External students can also use LMS to discuss the topics with each other.
Assessment Student comprehension of the weekly topics is tested through submission of a reading journal addressing questions provided with each topic (40%). These questions require students to summarise and apply knowledge gained through the topic readings and may also require research to locate further information or examples. The second assignment where students choose a case study topic from the list provided, investigate the topic and prepare an assignment addressing questions provided to guide their investigation (30%). A final exam assesses mastery of the concepts and terminology of climate change adaptation as well as student's ability to apply their knowledge to analyse case study examples (30%). Written feedback is provided for both assignments.
Prerequisites Enrolment in a graduate-level course.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed STP680 Climate Change Adaptation: Policy and Practice may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
