Description | This unit will provide students with information pertaining to the human body and the various systems within the body that act to maintain homeostasis. Specifically, students will learn about human physiology through examination of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, digestive, excretive and immune systems. Throughout this unit, students will be introduced to various disease states that can influence and ultimately unbalance the human system. |
Unit Learning Outcomes | The learning objective of this unit are categorised as Knowledge and Skills. Knowledge: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, nervous, digestive, kidney, neuromuscular, immune systems and how those systems support life. 2. Demonstrate knowledge of how disease can impact the above mentioned systems. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of how physical activity can influence the above systems. Skills: 4. Demonstrate the ability to collect information regarding cardio and pulmonary function during various activities. 5. Demonstrate the ability to collection information on the neuromuscular and nervous system during various activities. 6. Demonstrate the ability to research and disseminate information in reference to a selected system and the influence of disease and physical activity. |

Unit Learning Experiences | Content for this unit will be delivery using both traditional face-to-face contact and the use of video-based lectures. Student learning will culminate with the development of a poster that will be used to highlight their understanding of the lecture and tutorial content in the context of a common disease state. |
Assessment | Content in this unit will be assessed through three methods. These include a mid-semester and final theory exam as well as a group presentation. Feedback on exams and presentations will be provided by the unit coordinator or one of the content lecturers in this unit, unless advised otherwise. Assessment Item 1: Mid-Semester Theory Exam - 35% Assessment Item 2: Final Theory Exam - 40% Assessment Item 3: Group Presentation - 25% |

Internet Access Requirements | Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online. |
