Games and Apps Production Project (GAD502)

Description This unit aims to guide students through the process of designing, implementing, and launching a game or application for either mobile or desktop platforms. With a focus on commercial viability, engagement with client or potential user base, and plans for deployment and support, students will make use of industry best-practices and methodologies to develop an interactive software project according to budget, schedule, and quality constraints, comprising both individual and team-based components.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. Plan an application or game development project based on market or requirement analysis;
2. Create designs using a number of prototyping techniques;
3. Develop software, visual and audio assets, and implement planned designs;
4. Conduct playtests, interactive demonstrations, and evaluations of software products to guide development;
5. Maintain public facing documentation of your development process, such as a mailing list, website, or blog;
6. Produce documentation for design and development work in electronic form;
7. Manage and coordinate team activities and report on individual activities, tracking time allocation.
8. Employ disciplined conduct in development phases such as design, development, bugfix, launch, and maintenance.
Timetabled Learning Activities Tutorials: 2 x 2.5 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences As a production focussed unit, learning experience is largely modelled on both individual and team-based approaches to building / completing software projects in the games and apps spaces. Lecture content is delivered electronically and is intended as conceptual and theoretical reference to guide development.
Provided homework is dynamic and somewhat tailored to projects and project types in order to assist efforts in development and research.
Tutorial sessions are the bulk of the contact time, consisting of workshops in which development takes place, team meetings are held, and decisions are made. Tutorials are invaluable for face-to-face development, problem-solving, project adjustments, and asset integration, and augments team co-ordination and task management which takes place out of class.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
