Description This unit looks to identify and develop effective methods for analysing a service problem and designing aesthetic and systemic improvements that create and inform a better customer experience. Drawing on methods such as user experience design, co-design, information design and design thinking students will work through a client-based problem that will require an innovative and holistic proposition or solution.
Unit Learning Outcomes On completion of this unit students will be able to apply the concepts and techniques of information and service design. This involves:
1-demonstrating a knowledge of, and applying the principles and concepts of graphic design to an information design sequence for a service design system
2-researching, prototyping and evaluating information design sequences in relation to specific purposes, audiences, contexts and underlying technologies
3- synthesizing personal, group, industry convention and client based viewpoints towards the successful resolution of graphic design problems
4- demonstrating the successful application of information design concepts, skills and techniques in a service design project.
Timetabled Learning Activities Online lecture; media laboratories: 3 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The learning in this unit is primarily project based. Students will gain an understanding of the technical and conceptual aspects of information and service design systems through the interpretation of a client brief, producing information design composites for a range of contexts, toward the finished production of a service design system.
Assessment Assessment and feedback are iterative in that each assessment will cumulatively build on the next toward the successful design and development of an identity system. Students receive feedback through, in class discussion, written assignments, student group work and online assignment feedback and discussion.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
