Research Methods for Innovation (GRD504)

|Description||This unit focuses on ethnographic methods and visualisation techniques for gathering research data and presenting research findings for complex projects. Students will learn skills for exploring and identifying service issues for commercial and social sectors. Students will develop techniques for gathering research
data and visualising research information, which is required for clarifying wicked problems for stakeholders of service systems.
|Unit Learning Outcomes||ULO 1 Research ethnographic and visualisation methods for a specific purpose;
ULO 2 Critically engage human-centred design theory to research methods for analysing, interpreting and evaluating social and commercial service issues;
ULO 3 Demonstrate ethnographic practices for gathering rich data during the research stages of complex service oriented projects;
ULO 4 Demonstrate the use of visualisation methods toward clarifying complex project information for stakeholders of social and commercial issues;
ULO 5 Skilfully apply organisational and deliverable strategies toward the visual presentation of
complex project proposals;
ULO 6 Recognise that ethnography and visualisation play an essential role in addressing complex issues and developing project proposals for the innovation of social and commercial sectors around the globe.
|Timetabled Learning Activities|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is iterative and project based in which students will research, develop,
test and present design innovations for client projects. The labs involve the technical application of design
thinking tools and processes toward the development of innovative ideas and concepts for a client project.
Students will also experience practice-oriented teaching based on real-world case studies and action-learning
projects that ensures a tight integration of theory and practice.
|Other Learning Experiences||Direct consultations and meetings with academic supervisor (24 hours). These may take the form a group consultations with other consultants or one-to-one. Students may have the opportunity to undertake a placement or field trip as part of this unit.|
|Assessment||Assessment and feedback are iterative in that each assessment will cumulatively build on the next toward the successful design and development of an innovative project concept. Students receive feedback through, in class discussion, written assignments, group presentations, student group work and online assignment feedback and discussion.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in a graduate-level course.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
