The Vietnam Wars (HIS205)

|Description||Studies the wars in Vietnam and Indochina, from 1946 to 1975, and examines the local roots of antagonism as well as international pressures that exacerbated and expanded the conflicts. Topics include state and society in pre-war Vietnam, including 19th century Vietnamese politics, the impact of French conquest including social and intellectual change under colonialism, the rise of communism, the ambiguous statehood of South Vietnam, US intervention and the cold war in Asia, and the spread of war to neighbouring countries.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Learn important developments in the course of the Indochinese wars, learn the 'facts' or better put, develop historical knowledge.
2. Improve the ability to think critically and to argue effectively about history, gaining a historical sense.
3. Learn about the interactions between different groups that shaped regional history (historical sense).
4. Improve the ability to recognise and develop connections between historical issues and life outside the classroom; the 'what are the stakes' question or put more bluntly, 'who cares?' (historical sense).
5. Learn to read historical sources and effectively express their content in writing (expression); to analyse different types of written texts and identify how each of them is shaped by author, audience, and the context in which they were constructed (historical sense).
6. Develop the ability to communicate effectively in writing in a manner that is coherent, well-developed, and expressive of complex thought (expression).
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1.5 hours per week; tutorials: 1 hour per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Lectures will introduce students to broad scholarly trends relevant to the subject matter of the unit, and to important contextual information. In tutorials, students have the opportunity to discuss critical issues relating to the subject area, and to practise interpreting primary and secondary sources. Assessment tasks allow students to develop their skills in historical analysis and explore topics of particular interest.|
|Assessment||Students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills of historical interpretation and expression through analysis of a primary text, completion of an essay based on unit readings, and completion of a short-answer review. Internal students are also assessed on their tutorial participation.
Report (1000 words): 20%
Essay (2000 words): 35% (internal); 40% (external)
Tutorial Participation: 10% (internal only)
Exam: 35% (internal); 40% external.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
