Modern Southeast Asian History (HIS244)

Description This unit focuses on social, political and economic change in modern (19th and 20th centuries) Southeast Asia, and especially the collision of tradition and modernity and local responses to European and Japanese power. Additional topics will be: the role of overseas Chinese and Indians in the region, the changing status of women, modernity and religion, and transnational culture. Readings include classic works of regional study and more recent scholarship.
Unit Learning Outcomes The unit has three main objectives:
1. To learn the 'facts' of modern Southeast Asian history (historical knowledge);
2. To think critically about how history is constructed (historical sense/awareness), including appreciation of the politically charged historiography of the region and;
3. To clearly describe/analyse course topics (expression).
Timetabled Learning Activities Lecture: 1.5 hours per week; Tutorial: 1 hour per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit has one lecture of 1.5 hours and one tutorial of one hour each week. Lectures present an overview of the main concepts and issues in that week's broad topic, while tutorials are meant to be discussions the reading assigned for that week. The course uses moodle for unit announcements, the unit guide, other learning links and as a way to submit assignments.

Assessment Students will be assessed by:
Response Paper: 30%
Essay: 35%
Examination: 35%
Prerequisites Nil.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed either of the following units may not enrol in this unit for credit: HIS334 Modern Southeast Asian History; HIS334 Peasants, Rebels and Leviathan.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
